Dubai, UAE: Dubai will build at least 20 more public kindergartens to accommodate pupils currently on waiting lists, a senior education official said yesterday.
Speaking to Gulf News, Dubai Education Zone director Dr Ahmad Eid Al Mansouri said that his department is in talks with the Ministry of Education on the establishment of 20 more government-owned kindergartens as soon as possible.
“We now have only 11 public kindergartens in Dubai, which is inadequate to meet the current demand,” Dr Al Mansouri said. Twenty is the minimum number of schools required, he added. Each kindergarten will have 12 classrooms and each classroom will accommodate 18 students, Dr Al Mansouri said.
Inadequate
A study conducted by the Education Zone revealed that the number of seats available is inadequate, thus leading to the proposal, Al Mansouri said.
“The building of these new kindergartens could take three to five years.”
In the meantime, the number of students allowed in existing kindergartens will be upped from 20 to 25. “Once the new schools are up and running, the number will be brought down,” Dr Al Mansouri said. The Dubai Education Zone director said that the locations of the new schools were yet to be decided.
The construction of new classrooms at existing kindergartens is also being considered. This will likely start shortly so that the new classrooms are completed in time for the next academic year.
According to research on early childhood education by the Dubai School of Government in January, there is a high rate of enrolment of Emirati children in kindergartens (age group 4-6 years) with over 70 per cent enrolled in the private sector, while only 5 per cent of age-eligible Emirati children in Dubai are enrolled in nurseries (age group 0-4).
The report mentions that the public provision of nurseries is no better, with only two nurseries catering to 43 Emirati children.
As many as 2,041 Emirati children and 140 expatriate children were enrolled in public kindergartens, according to Knowledge and Human Development Authority statistics in 2009.
