CBSE board exams begin in the UAE

Dubai, UAE: For thousands of students in the UAE, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Grades 10 and 12 board exams present the final challenge in their schooling journey.

Months of practice and model exams prepare students for the board exams, which sets the stage for entry to university life. “I’ve been preparing for this exam for the entire year. It feels like this is one of the biggest tasks I’ve undertaken in my life,” said 12th grader Aasha Thomas, a Dubai-based student.

The CBSE exams for grade 12 will be held from March 1 to April 24, while the grade 10 exams will begin tomorrow and end on March 28.

However, for Class 10 students who choose the school-based exams, the exams will start on March 10. According to the CBSE board in New Delhi, about 2,500,000 students have registered to write the exam in India this year.

Nervousness among students
“We had a month to prepare before the board exams,” said Sanjana Naik, a Grade 10 student. At that time you are relaxed because you have more time to study. The night before the exam, most students stay up till midnight. My worst fear is forgetting what I have learned when I sit for the exam.”

School principals are, however, confident that their students, like every year, will be top performers. “Success is the result of diligent preparation and hard work, coupled with confidence in your ability to do well,” said Ashok Kumar, CEO of Indian High School, Dubai.

“It’s of paramount importance to keep calm and think positive before an exam. A little bit of nervousness or anxiety is but natural. The important thing is to not let it snowball and affect you. I am extremely confident of our students appearing for the exams.”

From the Indian High School, 721 Grade 10 students, and 514 Grade 12 students will be attempting the examinations. In addition, The Indian High School, Dubai also serves as an exam centre for students from Our Own English High School, Dubai (Girls), JSS Private School, and Our Own Indian School, Al Quoz (Grade 10- 736 students, Grade 12- 628 students from other schools).

Speaking about preparations for the exam, Michael Guzder, vice-president, Indian Schools for GEMS Education and executive principal of The Millennium School, Dubai, said: “We have had unit tests and term exams over the course of the year. Portions with grade 12 are completed by the first week of November. The pre-board exam is held in January.”

He added: “After that the students have had mock examinations for extra practice. Sample papers have been uploaded on our school portal. Those students who require more support receive this throughout the year with classes in the afternoon.” He added that students are always encouraged to go to school for extra help, as well.

Challenges faced by students
“The extensive syllabus in grade 12 is one of the biggest challenges faced by students,” said Guzder. Added to this, many students are busy with preparations for various competitive exams like SAT, medical and engineering exams as well as University Applications.” However, Guzder said students are better prepared. “Our teachers have been constantly in touch with students to clear doubts. Mails are sent frequently by the class teachers and supervisors. However, a little nervousness will always be there but that keeps the adrenaline pumping,” said Guzder.

Asma Gilani, the Principal of Our English High School (girls) said: “Undoubtedly, examination phobia is perennial. However, students today have become more vigilant, alert and cautious. Throughout the year, they have maintained a tight study schedule, and applied stress management techniques, shared their fears. They are emotionally stable and are in-charge, in control, and ready to make their own way to success.”
