Help others improve their wellbeing and quality of life by studying counselling. This programme will prepare you to become a professional counsellor and help you to help others cope with problems, such as mental health issues, bereavement and relationship issues. The modules you will study will be focused on person-centred counselling and current issues and best practice within the sector.

Aims

  • Meet the needs of voluntary and statutory organisations for appropriately trained and qualified Counsellors.
  • Offer a robust and vocationally relevant degree in Counselling for a wide range of students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Provide graduates with a base from which to pursue a career in Counselling.
  • Provide graduates with a base from which to pursue personal accreditation with the BACP and an honours degree in Counselling.

The course content has been designed to ensure that graduates will be able to demonstrate the knowledge, understanding, skills and personal development necessary to counsel professionally.

These requirements are in line with current BACP requirements.

Teaching & assessment

At Level 4, the teaching and learning strategies will allow you to develop the skills required for HE learning, and focus on the development of professional and personal counselling skills. At Level 5, the teaching and learning strategies used by tutors will continue to develop higher order intellectual skill of analysis but the focus will be on the development of evaluation and professional competence. This will be achieved through the use of a variety of mechanisms, particularly through the use of supervised counselling placements.

Independent learning will be encouraged and supported. At Level 4, these activities will be in part tutor directed and at Level 5 students will be expected to undertake more independent learning. Part of your professional and personal development will involve undertaking of a range of self-assessment activities at the start of the programme to allow you to plan your learning. The teaching team will draw on the results of these initial activities to ensure all learning styles are captured.
