This four-year extended degree includes a preparatory year (Year 0) which provides the background necessary for entry to our Biomedical Science BSc (Hons) course and is aimed at those who have little or no scientific background. The course is also suitable if you wish to change your subject area or for those whose secondary level science grades have not matched their expectations.

The BSc Biomedical Science Extended Degree includes a foundation year (Year 0), designed to act as a bridge between previous education or work experience to ensure that students have the knowledge and academic experience to complete a full BSc Biomedical Science degree programme successfully.

Extended degree students join the level 3 programme (Foundation Year) for the first year of study towards a Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Science. Throughout this four-year degree, we'll help build your knowledge and understanding of the molecules, structures, systems and processes which underpin normal cell, tissue and body functioning. You'll be able to independently critically evaluate and develop ideas on issues, methodologies and processes within the biomedical science field.

London Met is proud to be one of a limited number of institutions that offer this route into Higher Education. The programme is run by experienced staff and is carefully designed to be supportive and motivating and to build confidence and academic ability as well as an understanding of what academic study involves. The foundation year is designed to provide the fundamental knowledge base in key disciplines, such as biology and chemistry, which is required throughout the biomedical science degree course.

Assessment

Assessment consists of progress tests, online tests, coursework, practical reports and presentations.

Professional accreditation

The Biomedical Science BSc (Hons) degree is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). Upon completion, you'll be eligible for Associate Membership of the Institute.

What is an extended degree?

Extended degrees provide applicants with an alternative route into higher education. If you do not have traditional qualifications or cannot meet the entry requirements for an undergraduate degree, you may still be able to gain entry by completing an extended degree. Extended degrees include a Year 0, which is also known as a foundation year. Once you successfully complete your first year of study you will progress into Year 1 of an undergraduate degree.
