Sports Therapy Extended Degree
This four-year course includes a foundation year (Year 0), providing an alternative route into higher education if you don't have the traditional qualifications or can't meet the entry requirements for the Sports Therapy BSc (Hons). We'll introduce you to the field of sports therapy and explore how it relates to physiology, anatomy, psychology and coaching.
The Sports Therapy Extended Degree includes a foundation year (Year 0), designed to prepare you for the challenge of studying sports therapy at undergraduate level. Throughout the four-year course, you'll gain an excellent understanding of how sports therapists assess, treat and rehabilitate sports injuries or dysfunction, in order to help increase sports performance or prevent injury. A particular feature of the course is that you also get hands-on experience through our fully equipped sports therapy clinic, which is open to the public for consultation and treatment. Once you have completed the foundation year, the BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy course is then accredited by the Society of Sports Therapists (SST).
The programme is run by experienced staff with excellent links to national and local sports organisations, and is carefully designed to be supportive and motivating and to build confidence and academic ability as well as an understanding of what academic study involves. Some of our excellent teaching staff include academic leader Nick Gardiner, who has written for a prestigious sports medicine publication.
Assessment consists of progress tests, online tests, coursework, practical reports and presentations.
The Sports Science BSc (Hons) is accredited by The Society of Sports Therapists (SST). The SST provides student insurance throughout the degree and graduates will qualify to become members and purchase their public liability insurance from the SST.
In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have:
Other applicants may have Level 3 qualifications such as A level, BTEC Extended Diploma or Access to Higher education qualifications with high UCAS points and grades, but not in the relevant subject areas eg Biology and Chemistry, which are required to study for BSc programmes in the School of Human Sciences. All applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Applicants who require a Tier 4 student visa may need to provide a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as Academic IELTS. For more information about English qualifications please see our English language requirements.
Completion of the Sports Therapy BSc (Hons) course leads to careers in the scientific or commercial worlds or in the public sector. Our students have gone on to work for Arsenal FC, Chelsea FC, high profile private clinics as well as many students setting up their own successful practices. There is also the option of further study at postgraduate level with our Sports Therapy MSc course.
