Care of Extreme Low Birthweight Infants

This course has been awarded 14 CME credit hours by the Department of Health (Abu Dhabi)

This two-day course provides the advanced knowledge and skills required to care of an extreme low birth weight infant. The course comprises a mix of theory and practice that can be applied in an NICU setting.

• Definition of Extreme Low Birthweight
• Thermoregulation
• ELBW skin care
• Developmental care
• Common complications in ELBW infants
• Intra-Ventricular Hemorrhage (IVH)
• Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)
• ELBW infection risks

On completion of the course, you should be able to:

• Understand insensible water loss in extreme premature babies
• Practice correct positioning techniques
• Identify and apply evidence-based best practice in premature skin care
• Understand the importance of electrolyte and fluid balance
• Identify the risk factors associated with enteral and parenteral feeding for premature infants
