Breastfeeding

This course has been awarded CME credit hours by the Department of Health (Abu Dhabi)

This two-day course has been developed in accordance with the UNICEF/WHO (2009) Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) standards. The theoretical component covers BFHI training of doctors, midwives, nurses and other healthcare workers involved in the care of pregnant women, mothers and their newborn infants.

Course topics include

• The ten steps of successful breastfeeding (BFHI)
• Why breast milk is best
• Anatomy and physiology of breastfeeding
• The 'Golden Hour' of breastfeeding
• Breastfeeding during pregnancy
• Assisting with breastfeeding (positioning and attaching)
• Assisting sick mothers with breastfeeding
• Practices that assist breastfeeding
• Breastfeeding issues (baby won't feed)

On completion of the course, you should be able to

• Apply the theory and skills to implement the ten steps of breastfeeding.
• Educate and support breastfeeding mothers and their babies towards successful breastfeeding, by promoting exclusive breastfeeding as the optimum.
• Recognise and manage risk factors, conditions and complications in breastfeeding mothers and their babies.
