Welcome to Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München - the University in the heart of Munich. LMU is recognized as one of Europe's premier academic and research institutions. Since our founding in 1472, LMU has attracted inspired scholars and talented students from all over the world, keeping the University at the nexus of ideas that challenge and change our complex world.

Get an idea of who we are - the university in the heart of Munich. Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München is one of the leading research universities in Europe, with a more than 500-year-long tradition. The University is committed to the highest international standards of excellence in research and teaching.

As one of Europe’s leading research universities, LMU looks back on 500 years of tradition and forward to the challenges and responsibilities ahead. Its excellence in teaching and research embraces a wide diversity of fields—from the humanities and cultural studies through law, economics and social sciences to medicine and natural sciences. An intense interdisciplinary approach fosters the innovation so critical to our global future.

LMU’s faculty—whether they are early career professors or internationally renowned prize-winners—form the foundation of the University’s distinguished record in research. Their expertise, dedication, and creativity underpin the University’s success in the Germany-wide Excellence Initiative, a competition in which LMU has won the largest amount of grant support awarded to a single institution. These resources are being used to enhance our shared pursuit of knowledge, a constantly evolving process.

LMU is home to students from all parts of Germany and more than 130 countries around the globe. They benefit from the University's uniquely wide array of study programs and its strong focus on research. At all stages of academic training we emphasize the links between research and course content. Our students view their studies as a springboard to a rewarding career, not least because Munich is one of Germany’s major centers for technology and the media.

Academic diversity thrives in an environment that encompasses social skills alongside a critical awareness of values and history. This includes the Munich legacy of the Weisse Rose, the student-based resistance group that opposed Nazism.

When you come to LMU, you join a community dedicated to making the most of their talents, curiosity, and opportunities. I am both honored and humbled to be part of this community.

LMU Munich has a classical academic profile ranging from the humanities and cultural sciences, law, economics, and social sciences to medicine and natural sciences. The University is divided into 18 faculties and enjoys one of Germany’s finest library systems. Creative thinking, problem-solving and research are central to LMU’s academic programs. With 2,300 beds, its Medical Center is, next to the Charité in Berlin, the most prestigious and largest institution of this kind in Germany.

LMU Munich enjoys an excellent library system. Faculty and students also have access to the Bavarian State Library, the Technische Universität München Library, other local and state LMU partner libraries and the German university interlibrary loan network.

The university’s library system consists of the Main University Library and more than 130 decentralized libraries hosted by the individual faculties. Its total stock amounts to about 6.5 million volumes. The vast majority of the library system’s holdings are listed in the online catalog accessible on the Internet. Whereas the holdings of the decentralized libraries are generally not available for lending, the Main Library houses lending stocks totaling 2.4 million volumes. These include the valuable old inventory of over 3,000 manuscripts and approximately 400,000 old prints up to the publication year 1900, the second largest in the Free State of Bavaria.

Students and researchers at LMU Munich also have access to libraries at other universities and institutes of higher education in Munich as well as to partner libraries and the special libraries our university maintains.Since the founding of LMU Munich, the University Archive has preserved archival material from the Board of University Representatives, Rectorate, faculties and institutes and maintains its own special library of university and faculty history. It is open during special hours for academic research. Researchers are requested to contact the Archive in advance.

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) München is a public corporation with the right of self-governance within the confines of the law. At the same time, it is a state entity divided into a central administration and 18 faculties. The University Executive Board is composed of six members: the president and five vice presidents. The University Executive Board consults with its main advisory board, the University Council, comprised of members of the university as well as high-ranking and experienced representatives from the private sector, the professional world and other branches of academia. The University Governing Board consists of members of the Executive Board, the deans and the women’s representative of the university. To develop competitive procedures adapted to the logic and specific performance of the different subject groups, a system of consultative committees was introduced, the functions of which are defined in LMU Munich’s Basic Statutes.

The faculties themselves house various academic bodies such as departments and institutes, as well as managing units. In order to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, members of these academic bodies can merge to form crossdisciplinary centers.

Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich has truly transformed my son's academic journey; the faculty is always eager to assist, and it’s inspiring to witness the remarkable growth he’s achieved in such a vibrant environment.

Looks very historically made, with nice view from the top! Lecture halls are clean and large.

The roots of today's Ludwig-Maximilian University (LMU) go far into the past. When Ludwig Bogati, Duke of Bayern-Landshut founded the University in 1472, the offer of courses was quite traditional at that time: law, medicine and theology. The condition of studying at this university was completed by the General Faculty of Arts (the pandan is today the final year of the gymnasium). Otherwise, in the name of the university, besides the name of its founder, Duke Ludvig Bogatog, the name of Prince Max IV of Joseph was also inscribed.

At Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich, they offer different areas, but also open doors for foreign students. In addition, the city of Munich provides many things ...

"Universitas" in the classical sense Of all the universities, the offer of courses at this University Ludwig-Maximilian is the most diverse in all of Bavaria. At 18 faculties, there are about 150 study directions - from humanities and cultural sciences, through legal and economic, to natural sciences and medicine. This makes LMU the classic form of what is called "universitas". The only thing that can not be studied at this university, which in 2006 officially received the elite title, is engineering, because the Technical University of Munich is not far away, as one of the elite universities in Germany.

This university is not a classical university complex. As at the Technical University in this city, so at Ludvig-Maksimilijan University it is studying at several locations in the city. In addition to the main building at Geswister-Scholz, in the part of the city called Groshadern, there is a so-called "high-tech" camp (High-Tech-Campus). In the city center there is a clinic, and other institutes are spread around the city. 45,000 students study at this university, 15 percent of whom come from abroad.

Unorganized and unfriendly bulk handling. Documents, testimonies and test results can be traced for weeks. E.g. Young highly motivated lecturers, but old, lazy, and above all very arrogant lecturers. Can not recommend this university. Look for a smaller, better structured and above all more personal university.

Was always happy here, architecturally valuable and lots of nice, partially hidden places. One feels quite elitist when walking through the aisles;
