By every measure, the University of Adelaide—a member of Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight research-intensive universities—stands tall among the world’s leading institutions of learning and innovation. The clearest indication of this is our consistently high rating by the most respected international assessment bodies: QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education and Shanghai Jiao Tong’s Academic Rankings of World Universities (ARWU). All consider us one of the top 1% of universities worldwide, and the top university in our state.
We’re equally proud of the fact that the vast majority of our research is rated ‘above or well above world standard’ by the Australian Research Council’s Excellence in Research Australia program. We count among our distinguished alumni: five Nobel Laureates; over 100 Rhodes Scholars, including Australia’s first Indigenous recipient; and Australia’s first female prime minister and Supreme Court judge. Many of our staff and teachers are internationally recognised leaders in their fields. And we attract a diverse student body of over 27,000 from more than 90 countries.
The University is an international institution that distinctively embraces the ideal of the research university, where the excitement, vitality and passion of the search for new knowledge is one in which all students participate; as an enlightened and tolerant community where able students can find support, whatever their background or circumstances; and as a place where the Kaurna people, original custodians of the land on which the campuses now rest, are acknowledged and their culture respected. The University of Adelaide draws strength from its founding values as it fulfils its future research and teaching aspirations.
The University has three primary areas of focus. We are committed to achieving excellence in education, research and engagement with the community. Working closely with world-class academics, students acquire the skills, knowledge and experience to make a significant contribution in their careers. Operating at the cutting edge of their disciplines, our academics enthusiastically share their passion for new knowledge and encourage students’ own pursuits of world-changing discoveries. Equally important, students have ready access to staff throughout their time here, thanks to our low staff-to-student ratios. A commitment to incredibly high standards of teaching ensure students are given every opportunity to excel and fulfil their potential.
As well as the deep discipline knowledge and research skills they acquire, the key attributes of Adelaide graduate include critical thinking and problem solving, teamwork and communication skills, career and leadership readiness, intercultural and ethical competency, self-awareness and emotional intelligence. The support services and opportunities provided by the University, including mentoring, counselling, industry internships, career services, scholarships and accommodation services create an environment that provides students with the best opportunity for success.
Our researchers are committed to solving the world’s grandest challenges, and significantly impacting the economy, health, public policy and the quality of life. Adelaide’s research strengths span a wide range of sectors including food and wine, defence and security, health and medicine, engineering and technology, life sciences, mining and energy, and the environment.
Five world-class multidisciplinary research institutes mobilise expertise to lead progressive research reflecting global and national priorities in the areas of agriculture, environment, health and disease prevention, minerals and energy, photonics and advanced sensing.
Across Adelaide’s faculties and research centres, over 1700 researchers work collaboratively, across disciplines, and in partnership with industry and government. Their excellence is recognised in world university rankings and 99% of our research areas were rated as ‘world standard or above’ in the latest ‘Excellence in Research Australia’ assessment.
The University works with the community through strategic partnerships and alignments with business and enterprise, government bodies, other research institutions, non-government organisations and industry groups. This is reflected in an extensive local and international partnership network. The University’s city campus is part of the North Terrace cultural boulevard, with the State Library, Art Gallery of South Australia and South Australian Museum. Our iconic sandstone buildings along this promenade include Bonython Hall, the Mitchell building and Elder Hall. We are committed to working with the community to make the transformative effect of a university education accessible to more people and to link ground-breaking research with real-life applications.

Full of racist group and individuals. Not so qualified staff who can’t even speak English properly. Not worth the money and time. Expensive tuition yet not so recognisable degree internationally. In one word.... regret to study there

Best place to go to university in Australia in my opinion, for undergrad at least. The campus is just beautiful, it manages to blend the feel of the timeless historic buildings together with the modern facilities and schools. The university's diverse set of students is full of friendly and passionate individuals wanting to learn. Adelaide gets nothing short of 5 stars from me!

I loved my time at the venerable University of Adelaide and would recommend it. Its faculties are very esteemed; the programmes offered are intellectually-stimulating and rigorous. The campus is state-of-the-art and everything is a walking distance from it as it is centrally located. There is a great feeling of intellect and tradition in the atmosphere of the school.
