University of Malaya, or UM, Malaysia's oldest university, is situated on a 750 acre (309 hectare) campus in the southwest of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. It was founded on 28 September 1905 in Singapore as the King Edward VII College of Medicine and on 8th October 1949, it became the University of Malaya with the merger of the King Edward VII College of Medicine and Raffles College (founded in 1928).
The University of Malaya derives its name from the term 'Malaya' as the country was then known. The Carr-Saunders Commission on University Education in Malaya, which recommended the setting up of the university, noted in its Report in 1948. The growth of the University was very rapid during the first decade of its establishment and this resulted in the setting up of two autonomous Divisions on 15 January 1959, one located in Singapore and the other in Kuala Lumpur. In 1960, the government of the two territories indicated their desire to change the status of the Divisions into that of a national university. Legislation was passed in 1961 and the University of Malaya was established on 1st January 1962.

Top university in Malaysia, it's good to study here. The cafes and foods are very nice especially the Faculty of Science roti canai. Have quite some good places to relieve stress and near to most malls around KL.

As a student, i would say im lucky to be able to study here, the facilities here are adequate and there are many places with beautiful sceneries such as the lake where students and visitors can go canoeing, i dont know the exact term, too lazy to google.

I did my master and phd at department of physics, UM. Nothing can describe how grateful it is to be at one of the best Univeristy in Malaysia. The lab was my second home and the lecturers has proven themself in modern academic teaching as well as publishing journal. I wish to contribute back to UM one day.

University Malaya is located at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It's 10 minutes away from Pasar Seni.
Every year I come to this University to send my students for an International Scrabble Tournament.
All the students are professional and outstanding. They are not only from Malaysia, but also from different countries like Indonesia and Singapore.There are also some canteens inside the campus and the price is affordable for students. There are Nasi lemak, nasi goreng and many more. If you are walking to residental college, they provide water refill and there is also vending machine. It's really helpful for students.

Proud to be an alumni. My whole life changed after joining this university. Alumni of International Relations department of Social Sciences faculty. Outstanding courses with spectacular lecturers on the line. I couldn't say much but this whole 3.5 years changed my view of the world and the knowledge itself. Very lucky to be going through this journey.UM really holds the status as the best university in Malaysia due to it's amazing lecturers, libraries and the education itself.
