Dalhousie University is proudly located in Halifax, Nova Scotia which is ranked one of the friendliest cities in the world. Founded in 1818, we're one of Canada’s oldest universities, attracting more than 18,800 students from around the world. The university blends transformative academic programs with pioneering research on Canada’s East Coast.

We offer vibrant academic programs thanks to continual innovation in the classroom and a focus on interactive learning. And as Atlantic Canada’s leading research university, we excel in collaboration with industry and opportunity for discovery.

As our 11th president, Dr. Richard Florizone's passion and vision will guide us into our third century, and continue our evolution into an academic and research powerhouse that engages and collaborates with local, national and global communities.

  • Leadership team
  • Strategic planning
  • Toward 2018

We take great pride in our students’ achievements and celebrate their successes. With the guidance of our leadership team, we deliver opportunities that inspire students, faculty, and staff. The president and vice-chancellor is the chief executive officer, responsible to the Board of Governors and to the Senate for the supervision of Dalhousie University’s administrative and academic work.

As we look ahead to our third century, we do so encouraged by our past and challenged to live up to its promise: to take our place among the best universities in the world; to inspire, to innovate and to create a lasting impact in the lives of students, faculty and staff; and to contribute to the positive intellectual, social and economic transformation of our communities locally and internationally.

In 2013, we embarked on 100 Days of Listening, a period of rigorous analysis and thorough consultation, which resulted in a comprehensive statement of priorities: Inspiration and Impact: Dalhousie’s Strategic Direction 2014–2018, which included revamped vision and mission statements for the university and identified five strategic areas. Since then, the Dalhousie community has worked together to bring our priorities to life. Implemented under the Provost in a process geared to ensure that our academic goals drive our work and that our strategic priorities are aligned within the university’s budget, our shared efforts are targeted at maximizing collaboration and coordination across the university.

We are a leading innovative, research-intensive university, inspiring our diverse scholarly community to serve Nova Scotia, our region, our nation and our world. Our mission is three-fold:

  • To foster an environment of teaching and learning excellence, built on innovation, collaboration and respect;
  • To create a hub of world-leading research and innovation, adding to the intellectual, social and economic capital of our communities;
  • To facilitate opportunities for our students, staff and faculty to connect with and serve our local, national and global communities.

Studying in Nova Scotia has been a transformative experience; the dedicated faculty truly invests in student success, and I've seen remarkable personal growth in my child.

Although this is the best university in the east coast ( NS, NB, NL, P.E.I.), it has a lot of problems to solve and a lot need to be improved. The university experiences financial problems and its using students as fundraiser, and end up providing disappointing education qualities especially to international students. Halifax and Nova Scotia people shows a lots of prejudice to foreigners even though they looks friendly. This kind of culture is in every corner of the campus.

Dalhousie has one of the most beautiful university campuses I've ever been on. I stayed in one of the newer residences for a month in the summer and absolutely loved it. The campus is teeming with life and is really close to downtown which is nice.

This utter piece of trash uni does not deserve a star; rather it should be taken out & shot! Can't say for ALL uni's in Canada...but I've studied in a few already and it's been the most abysmal experience due to pathetic, substandard quality of education & professors, library, students & opportunities and just fails across the board really. All that glitters is NOT gold...this garbage uni is certainly an absolute waste of money for international students. On the positive side, there's no lack of ignorant, arrogant, impolite and condescending idiots in the faculty, administration and student groups. Inspiring minds...sure did inspire me to write this review!This utter piece of trash uni does not deserve a star; rather it should be taken out & shot! Very big campus with lots of potential for those seeking knowledge in a vast variety of fields. This means - access to a huge number of faculty that is always available for you and access to a very wide range of degrees and post-degree positions which can satisfy many walks of life.

Commonly known as Dal, is a public research university in Nova Scotia, Canada, with three campuses in Halifax, and a fourth in Bible Hill. Dalhousie offers more than 4,000 courses and 180 degree programs in twelve undergraduate, graduate, and professional faculties.[3] The university is a member of the U15, a group of research-intensive universities in Canada

Did my undergrad at Dalhousie, and I believe it is the best university in Canada when it comes to learning and student life. I visited U of Toronto, Queens, McMasters, Mt. Allison, MSVU and none of these campuses are as convenient as Dal. Some may argue that Toronto is right in downtown on subway, but the housing is very expensive and the environment is very crowded. I completed a two-years Master program at McGill. Montreal and McGill students are fascinating, but the school itself has some awful professors and crowded classrooms. When I did my undergrad in Halifax, Dalhousie-Kings College offered a wide variety of programs, gave out many bursaries and scholarships, and had a ton of societies which you can get involved. The professors and university administration were extremely friendly and approachable. On another note: if you are looking to go to Med school, go to Halifax, partake in the municipal election, and then apply to Dal Med. You will have a higher chance of entering as a NS resident. Since the quality of undergraduate education is unanimous in all universities, student life and experiences are what it really matters when choosing a university for undergraduate studies.
