Created in 1821, the University of Buenos Aires is one of the most important public institutions of higher education in Latin America and is currently a national and international landmark for education and vocational training, research and university extension.

The government of the University of Buenos Aires is constituted by the Rector and the Superior Council. The Rector is elected by the University Assembly -– a representative organ of the Schools - and lasts four years in his functions. The Superior Council is composed of the Rector, the Deans of the thirteen Faculties and five representatives for each of the academic bodies: teachers, graduates, and students. Each School has a government composed of the Dean and the Board of Directors, which consists of eight representatives of the Academic Staff, four of the graduates and four of the students, all of them elected by a direct and compulsory voting system. The Board of Directors is the one that designates the Dean and Deputy Dean, positions that must be exercised by Professors of the same School.

The University of Buenos Aires -UBA- was created by a decree of the government of the Province of Buenos Aires in August 1821 and was formally inaugurated with a ceremony held at San Ignacio's Church, constituting the second university founded in the territory of Argentina. It was initially organized into six departments: Letters, Preparatory Studies, Exact Sciences, Medicine, Jurisprudence, and Sacred Sciences. In 1881, UBA became dependent on the National Government and in 1886 it assumed the organization in Faculties, the first one being: Medical Sciences, Law and Social Sciences, and Exact Sciences. In its almost two centuries of history , it has become one of the most important public institutions of higher education in Latin America and is currently a national and international reference centre for education and vocational training, research and university extension.

At present, the University of Buenos Aires represents a prestigious institution for training and a marked commitment to society.

Scientific research and technological development are two of the main pillars of the University of Buenos Aires.
The Secretary of Science and Technology works on the scientific and technological transfer and the identification and promotion for entrepreneurship activities within the University.
The transfer of knowledge, a priority for UBA, occurs broadly through different channels including the training of graduates and researchers, publications, and formal and informal ties with other public and private organizations.
In this way, UBA seeks that the knowledge generated in the field of the University reaches society in the form of products, service and input for other institutions.
The Secretary of Science and Technology administers the main funding tiers for research (grants and subsidies) and manages the Sistema de Bibliotecas e Información (SISBI) - Library and Information System, the Interdisciplinary Programs (PIUBAS for its acronym in Spanish) and more than 60 Research Institutes.

The University of Buenos Aires has 61 research institutes which encourage and develop research activities in different scientific fields, train researchers and engage in technology transfer, hence promoting interdisciplinary activities. These institutes establish bonds with businesses, the State and NGOs with the aim of solving specific problems.
There are 17 Institutes of Scientific, Humanistic and Technological Development Research and 44 Institutes in a strategic alliance with the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnica -National Council of Scientific and Technical Investigations-.
