Hanyang University is a private research university in South Korea. The main campus is in Seoul, and the second one, the Education Research Industry Cluster at Ansan, or ERICA campus, is located in Ansan. Hanyang (한양;漢陽) derives from the former name of the capital Seoul which was used during the Chosun Dynasty. Its motto and educational philosophy is Love in Deed and Truth.
The university established the nation's first engineering institute (DongA Engineering Institute) in 1939 which became the founding facility of Hanyang University. It also established the first school of architecture and civil engineering in Korea.
Hanyang University has an alumni network of 300,000 that is not limited to the field of engineering but also to other fields. In 2015, Hanyang was ranked 1st for the number of CEO alumni of venture companies. In 2017, QS ranked Hanyang University 155th in '2017 QS World University Rankings'.
The university enrolls over 3,000 foreign students each year and more than 3,000 students study abroad annually. HYU counts the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Cambridge, and Tsinghua University among its 777 partner universities in 76 countries.
Hanyang will build on our legacy as a major driving force behind South Korea’s miraculous development. Driving our successes beyond national borders, we are aiming to fulfill our centennial goal of being among the most impactful research universities in the world.
Hanyang University opened as an aspiring engineering institute in 1939 with the founding principles: “Application of Knowledge” and “Love in Deed.” Based on this tradition of pursuing innovation and service to society, Hanyang has secured its position as one of the nation’s top ranking institutions.
From its earliest days, Hanyang has been committed to prepare graduates to be influential leaders in their communities. We take great pride in our community of alumni who have helped us earn our reputation as “the Engine of Korea.” As South Korea was rebuilding the entire nation from the ashes of war, our graduates have since been highly instrumental in laying the foundations to shape Korea to be the prosperous, modern nation it is today.
Such unparalleled transformation was the outcome of harnessing our collective knowledge and compassion as a country. I am a witness of this miraculous development that South Koreans have achieved together during my lifetime, and I am elated to see more results of the collective synergies that like-minded people around the world can achieve together.
We plan to extend the scope of our education, research, community involvement and partnerships to every corner of the world. In order to strengthen our capacity to contribute to the world, the pursuit of excellence and creative inquiry are at the heart of all that we do. So whether you are a potential student, a parent, a donor or a member of the community, I invite you to consider what contributions you can make with Hanyang. Join us in our journey to make a difference in our world.
With the establishment of Hanyang University in 1939, the University set its goal as the advancement of Korea, following the turbulent period which the country had just experienced. Founded during the Japanese occupation (1910-1945), the University represented the strong desire of the Korean people to control their educational institutions. Since then, Hanyang has succeeded in developing into a top ranking university in the nation, continuing to make important contributions to the growth and development of Korea. Hanyang has also broadened its goals to include the advancement of Asia and the world.
During Korea's rise from its status as a relatively poor and underdeveloped nation to a highly industrialized modern society, the need for well-informed and competent leaders for various industries and businesses has increased. Accordingly, one of Hanyang's main goals has been to produce highly-educated and professionally-trained individuals who can meet the needs of this rapidly growing and developing country.
In addition, the educational objectives at Hanyang are more than pragmatic; the university also strives to encourage students to become responsible and well-rounded citizens with an awareness of their cultural heritage, through various required courses ranging from history to civil services.

It is a famous university for engineering. It is located on a small hill and has a train station inside the campus. There are many programs for international students. The buildings in the campus look amazing.

I taught from 2008-15 in the Food and Nutrition Department. It was ranked #1 in the country. It's a stunningly beautiful campus, especially in spring (flowers--see photos) and fall (trees with many different colored leaves), located on the east side of Seoul near Wangsimni (there is another campus far south of the city). My wife and I had good experiences at the hospital, including a back operation which went well. It has amazingly sculpted trees, both large and small, and many incredible walls of large rocks with flowers planted in them.

it's cool how subway station is connected to the university, but mainly all the buildings are located up on the hill and i feel like i'm climbing every morning. compared to other universities, our buildings' design is so dull and concrete is everywhere :/ well i do love my school but it seems it needs some improvement.

The university is really pretty at day and night, in each season of the year. Near are many places to hangout with friends. You can find small grocery shops and for more variety there is also a supermarket. Close to the subway, transportation is convenient.
