As one of Germany’s youngest universities, we are able to operate in an unbiased, self-confident spirit of academic freedom, scientific progress, and social responsibility. In line with our vision, our top priorities are individual supervision, maintaining high academic standards, and creating programmes of study that take current research into account. Our interdisciplinary focus and the innovative collaboration between many of our disciplines are key features of Bayreuth’s research culture.
We are proud that the quality of our research and study environment is confirmed by external assessment committees. Here you will find a selection of certificates and awards the University of Bayreuth has earned over the past couple of years. Our ranking results can be found in our separate ranking overview.
The University of Bayreuth has six faculties, whose disciplinary and interdisciplinary concentrations are to thank for the university’s national and international reputation – ideal conditions for those who want to teach and conduct research with the best and brightest.
The University of Bayreuth may not offer the same range of courses as super-sized universities. But our size makes it easy for us to ensure the highest academic standards across our whole spectrum of courses. And we in Bayreuth agree: that is what really counts.
The main ingredient in our success: the strength of our disciplines.
We understand that strong disciplines are the basis of cross-disciplinary teaching and research. It is for this reason that the University of Bayreuth has chosen to concentrate its efforts on six faculties, making sure that their research and teaching is nurtured and fostered across the board.
We take pride in our accomplishments, and our faculties regularly make headlines in the academic world. In 2013 for example, three professors at the University of Bayreuth were awarded Advanced Grants by the European Research Council. These grants represent the highest honour conferred by the EU for outstanding scholarly achievement. These three scholars are based at the Chair for Physical Chemistry I of the Bavarian Research Institute of Experimental Geochemistry & Geophysics (one of the University of Bayreuth’s research centres), where they are conducting trail-blazing fundamental research towards the design of new materials.
Our reputation for scholarly achievement has affected the university positively in every regard. The campus, with its impressive research facilities and institutes, has long been an international magnet for science and teaching. That is probably why the University of Bayreuth has been able to celebrate so many awards and honours for its scholarly accomplishments.
At our faculty, students and junior scholars have the chance to work in a highly creative research environment. Research prizes such as a European Advanced Grant, a Leibniz Prize, a Lichtenberg professorship, and a Humboldt Research Award bear witness to the strength of our cutting-edge research.
Our faculty's reputation continues to attract outstanding scholars from around the globe. They are drawn to the excellent research environment and proactive teaching on campus. This is also what students appreciate most, as is borne out by results of the evaluations that are conducted on a regular basis.
The Faculty of Mathematics, Physics & Computer Science has well-equipped laboratories, lecture halls and CIP pools, in addition to an HPC cluster with 97.6 teraflops (that’s a lot). The faculty's well-stocked library provides free access to a wide variety of e-books. Students also benefit from research-based internships and access to high-performance mathematical software. They can even write their bachelor's or master's theses while working as part of an international research team in a field such as robotics, computer graphics, algebraic geometry, dynamics and optimization, biological physics, or innovative materials and energy.
The faculty's institutes are active in interdisciplinary research associations and research training groups covering topics such as polymer and colloid science, molecular biosciences, high-pressure and high-temperature research, nonlinear dynamics, and complex systems.
Languages are keys with which to unlock other cultures – this is a guiding principle at the University of Bayreuth’s Faculty of Languages & Literature. And the convenience of a compact campus, small teaching groups, and direct contact with teaching staff all come together to provide programmes that are both intensive and well-supported.
Our faculty offers a range of study programmes relating to foreign cultures, such as Romance Studies, African Studies, Anglophone Cultural Studies, but also a range of other disciplines including German Studies, Theatre & Media and Music. Humanities programmes at the University of Bayreuth are particularly attractive thanks to the heavy focus on intercultural processes and a primarily comparative approach to cultural studies. We specialize in research and teaching on the relationships between European and non-European languages, cultures, and literatures, while maintaining the applied, practical nature of our work.
Our faculty’s departments work thoroughly in the spirit of Wilhelm von Humboldt’s ideas on combined teaching and research. Their projects are funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Research Foundation (DFG), for example through the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies. We also enjoy a range of international partnerships and cooperate with several European and Asian universities to offer intercultural programmes of study.

Thank you once again for doing your part to keep Edarabia the most trusted education source.
Since it is a campus university, studying is quite good here. Meanwhile, there are many students at the university, so it is quite crowded sometimes.

There are always good lectures and events which are also accessible to the public.

Overcrowded lecture theaters in the context of fac. Ing. Events.
Except for a few exceptions, such as LS engineering mathematics, microbiology and PC, unmotivated and disinterested lecturers, who clearly teaches the lesson as a chore. Of the many relationship relationships at various departments not yet started.
Uncooperative and completely inflexible examination office. It is better not to do so, constructive help should not be expected.
Fortunately, the fact that it is all about worlds better in all areas, I have learned by changing the university itself. The University of Bayreuth is certainly not a recommendation for engineering studies.
Only the nice campus and the really good food of the refectory is worth a star.

Anyone who has already studied at another university appreciates the incredibly good organization and quality of the university of bayreuth. Not only very nice, helpful and competent examination offices, but also a very hard-working student firm, friendly bibm staff and many more people try to make the study as pleasant and complaint as A big thank you for that!
P. S.: the language could still follow a little bit

Study good ie lectures interesting and informative and lecturers fair and professionally competent. In General, I was satisfied with my master. Deduction is clearly for the organization. In The course of the course, as well as in the examination office, there is often chaos (registration for courses, auction procedures), being It would be useful to have more staff, then those responsible would not be so stressed This is especially true for the humanities, who are happy to forget...
