Master of Media and Communications
The Master of Media Design is an innovative postgraduate degree program that focuses on the concept and practice of Media Design. This program is not about graphic design but rather about the design thinking processes that underpin the creation and communication of media work, artefacts and projects. It aims to prepare individuals to shape the future of the media industry with strategic, user-centered, and innovative approaches to creating media artefacts that have value, utility, and meaning in today’s world.
In this program, students will not only master the design of individual media projects, but also learn to design processes, workflows, and systems, considering the interconnectedness of individual components within a broader communication ecosystem, in society, and in the world around us. Our goal is to produce forward-thinking media design professionals who can navigate the complexities of the rapidly changing media landscape and contribute to the field with thoughtful, innovative, and impactful work and media artefacts.
Graduates of this program will be leaders of the media and creative industries, using media design principles to drive change in the industry and society, focusing on user-centered approaches to creative problem-solving and media-making. As leaders in the industry, you will be adept at translating abstract concepts into engaging media experiences, shaping the future of how we create, consume, and interact with media, people, and the world around us.
Assistant Professor
Program Director (Undergraduate & Postgraduate Media)
School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Health
Dr Michael L. Mallory is the Program Director for Media & Communication at the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD). He teaches a wide range of courses in the Bachelor of Communication and Media (BCM) and Master of Media and Communication (MMC) degrees which are mainly in the areas of digital & social media and media studies.
Dr Michael believes some of the most meaningful learning happens when open, collaborative, experimental, and at times, disruptive and slightly chaotic. His approach to educating is an attempt to break away from ‘traditional’ lecturing, from memorization and regurgitation of ‘facts’ and information, and bring students into hands-on, practical learning environments. Teaching and learning is a process and using processes forces us to think about the end-to-end experience of students, and to constantly adjust our teaching methods and strategies. This process is an approach that combines design thinking, design making and design breaking
Prior to joining UOWD, Dr Michael was Assistant Professor with the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) at the campus in Beijing, China. Prior to China, he studied, worked and taught in multiple cities in Thailand.
Dr Michael received his PhD in 2017 from the European Graduate School (EGS) under the supervision of Professor Wolfgang Schirmacher. While at EGS, he had the opportunity to study under some of the most prominent names in academia. Slavoj Zizek, Simon Critchley, Alain Badiou, Giorgio Agamben, Michael Hardt and Avital Ronell were a few who had a significant impact on his studies and research.

He teaches courses in the Bachelor of Communication and Media (BCM) and Master of Media and Communication (MMC) degrees focusing on screen media production and film and media studies. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego, where he studied film history and theory.
His courses employ community building, collaborative learning, and individualized attention and feedback to better help students examine the world around them, critically navigate the regimes of representation in which we all operate, and respond to those regimes in critical and creative ways.
Dr Anderson’s research and teaching interests focus on writing for the screen, film and media production, visual studies, film genres, and transnational film history.
