Over 4,000 students study at JCU Cairns, including about 380 international students. The campus location is spectacular – surrounded on three sides by rainforest-covered mountains. Located near the northern beaches in the suburb of Smithfield, the campus is 15 kilometres (9 miles) north of the city centre.

JCU Cairns houses state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities in an attractive setting. Facilities include an impressive library and information technology building, health science and science laboratories, student refectory, café, licensed bar, gym, sporting oval and basketball court.

With over two million visitors annually, Cairns is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Australia. Attractions include two World Heritage natural environments – the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the Wet Tropics ancient rainforests; nearby resort regions include Port Douglas and Mission Beach; the picturesque Atherton Tablelands and outback Queensland are within easy reach.

Our preferred accommodation partner in Cairns is the Cairns Student Lodge, who offer the full university study/accommodation experience. There are other private rental options close to campus, and our Accommodation service can help you find the best option for you.

Since our establishment in 1970, we have expanded into a multi-campus institution with our main campuses in the tropical cities of Cairns, Singapore and Townsville, with smaller study centres in Mount Isa, Thursday Island and Mackay. We also have a campus in Brisbane, operated by Russo Higher Education.

Our students come from many backgrounds, promoting a rich cultural and experiential diversity on campus. Our undergraduate and postgraduate courses span the Arts, Biomedical Sciences, Business, Creative Media, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Healthcare Sciences, Information Technology, Law, Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, Pharmacy, Planning, Psychological Science, Science, Social Work, Sustainability and Veterinary Science. We aim to give graduates the qualifications and skills they need for the global workforce.

We also recognise our special obligation to be relevant to our own region and have forged close linkages into the economy and social fabric of the northern Queensland. We are dedicated to ensuring that our teaching, learning and research is not only of high quality, but also delivers practical benefits to the peoples and industries of the region.

If you are an Indigenous person looking to study, JCU has great facilities and staff to help towards achieving your goals. They have a new building called the Indigenous Education and Research Center (A21) with very supportive staff and a lovely group of Indigenous students studying various degrees. Friendly and Supportive Staff & students. Great Place to learn

I couldn't have asked for a better undergraduate experience on terms of learning and friendliness. Only at JCU do you have the opportunity to be next to the university and actually get to know your lecturers. All my IT lecturers were incredible. I work at Google now but finally remember days of playing short with my lecturers and fellow students... And 10 years later I still keep on touch.

JCU, Cairns, has a relaxing tropical atmosphere that makes it a great place to learn and study. The students and teachers are laid back, down to earth, friendly and approachable. The quality of education is no different from any other larger institutions. The flora, fauna and mountains that surround the university is diverse and adds to the tropical atmosphere. Almost zero noise and air pollution. The only negatives are it's too far out of town and not in a central location. There is also not a large variety of extracurricular activities to chose from. Comfy chairs in the library too.
