MERI-symbolizes the birth of marine engineering training in India. The Institute was established at the onset of Independence of India in 1947 to satisfy the growing need of marine engineers in India. It was founded in 1949 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as "Directorate Of Marine Engineering Training' (DMET) with its headquarter in Calcutta and a branch at Bombay, under the Ministry of Shipping (Government of India). It was renamed "Marine Engineering and Research Institute" in 1995. MERI was a dream project of a new India, as it was expanding its horizon in the marine field. Starting with an initial intake of 60 cadets, today about 280 young and highly motivated Marine Officers are passing through her hallowed portals every year.
