The Public Petition dated 11-11-1839 initiated the establishment of Madras University. It was in January 1840, that the University Board was constituted. In 1854 after a lapse of 14 years, the Government of India formulated a systematic educational policy for India and as a sequel to this on 5th September 1857 by an Act of Legislative Council of India, the University was established. The University was organised in the model of London University.
Madras University is the mother of almost all the old Universities of south India. The University area of jurisdiction has been confined to three districts of Tamil Nadu in recent years. This is consequent to establishment of various universities in the State and demarcation of the University territories. This University has been growing from strength to strength while widening its teaching and research activities.
The University imparts both Under Graduate and Post Graduate Education through the Affiliated Institutions which are spread over the districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram. Apart from teaching, research activities in Arts, Humanities, Science, Management and Technology shpae the academic tenor of the University. A number of institutions affiliated to Madras University concentrate on research activities offeringe Ph.D., Programmes in their respective field of specialisation.
The University also offers teaching and research programmes in its four campuses. The 68 University Departments of study and research are spread over four campuses organised into 18 Schools each of which offer Post Graduate Courses in respective specialisation, part time and full time Ph.D. Programmes, Diploma and Certificate Programmes. The University has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with the five star rating first, and later with an A rating. The UGC has recognised the University as one of the centres for "potential for excellence" in the country.
The University is proud to have several illustrious alumni as Nobel Laureates, Presidents of India, Statesmen, Chief Justice of India, Ministers, Administrators, Distinguished Researchers and Academicians. It has been accredited by NAAC with a high grade consecutively in the three accreditation cycles, and in the 3rd cycle accredited with ‘A+’ grade. It is recognised as one of the first five Universities for the UGC’s prestigious programme, “University with Potential of Excellence (UPE)”. Many of the University departments are recognised for funding and research support from UGC, DST, DBT, CSIR, ICSSR, ICHR, Central and State governments among others and international agencies. Further, the University has been collaborating with Indian and Foreign Universities to promote student and teacher exchange programmes.
It is a matter of pride that 9 colleges under the University have featured in the top 100 list of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2017 and this is also the highest among all Universities in Tamil Nadu. The University also has a large number of colleges accredited with high grade A and A+ by NAAC. The University of Madras is a pioneer in granting autonomy to Colleges as early as 1978 and currently there are 23 Autonomous Colleges affiliated to the University.

Very spatial. Superb library. Nice atmosphere. Can get good mineral water for free. Timings till 6.45 . However open till 7.30. can sit & read for full day. Washrooms, canteen available. After reading there from morning to evening. . . U can go to beach for a small walk.. . . Refreshing experience. I love madras university. Doing my msc geography there.

Well if I started to say about my University, University of madras then it will be come out as a essay.as a student of this University definitely we will be happy to say that we are blessed,except all infrastructure regarding study, I would say we should feel proud for Senate house.university of madras is one of the prestigious University among India's top University.each & every department are having their separate infrastructure as per their need.university having 3 branches: cheapauk,guindy,taramani. Canteen facility also good.
