In 1823 a small institution was founded that was to revolutionise education in Liverpool and provide opportunities for the working people of the city. The Liverpool Mechanics Institute was founded by people of power and influence who recognised the transformative effects of education and the impact that learning and aspiration could have on individuals, communities and society. It was the first such institution to be founded in England.

This small, pioneering movement was followed by the establishment of the Liverpool Institute and School of Art and the Liverpool Nautical College, and in 1900 Irene Mabel Marsh opened the IM Marsh campus. These organisations together laid the foundations for Liverpool John Moores University, an institution that has grown and flourished and continues to provide opportunities for all.

Today, with a vibrant community of 25,000 students from over 100 countries world-wide, 2,500 staff and 250 degree courses, Liverpool John Moores University is one of the largest, most dynamic and forward-thinking universities in the UK.  As a modern, civic university, we are integral to the life of the city, but we are also global in our approach, forging international partnerships to facilitate world-leading research and collaboration to tackle some of the huge global issues facing the modern world that have an everyday impact here at home.

As an institution we are unashamedly ambitious – for our students, our staff and for the wider global community. Under the leadership of our Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, Professor Nigel Weatherill, we are undergoing a renaissance as the strength of our teaching and research continues to exceed even our own high expectations. We were one of the highest climbers nationally in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, which assesses the quality of research in the UK. We are on an upward trajectory in the major UK league tables. Our student satisfaction scores increase year on year. All of this helps to build on our solid reputation for providing students with the highest quality teaching and a learning experience informed by relevant, credible and world-leading research.

We acknowledge and celebrate our successes and achievements, but we never rest on our laurels. Continuing to improve and enhance the experience and opportunities offered to our students is the driving force for the whole University – our pioneering work in improving graduate prospects, our innovative approach to cultural partnerships and our evolving student-focused campus are setting benchmarks for the essence of university life in the 21st century. We have an open and enthusiastic academic community operating in world-class facilities. Diversity is valued; endeavour is supported and achievement is celebrated.

We will continue to provide our students with an exceptional experience and encourage our staff to push the boundaries of their professional and academic disciplines so that we are ready and able to thrive in a world of endless possibility and potential. We are an ambitious and forward thinking institution that challenges convention and believes passionately in the concept of ‘One University’ – a community working together to achieve common student-centered objectives within a clear strategy. To be recognised as a modern civic university delivering solutions to the challenges of the 21st century. We believe in the power of education to drive transformation across social, cultural and economic boundaries. We are innovative and progressive with an entrepreneurial spirit; we think creatively about new ways to do things. We strive for the highest standards in everything we do. We believe that by working together in partnership we can achieve strong and lasting results. We believe in leading the way, challenging convention and breaking new ground.

The vibrant learning atmosphere in Liverpool has empowered my child to excel, with dedicated staff guiding their journey toward success.

Joke university. The university is nothing shory of a disgrace with students being treated as nothing less than a number and cash cow. Paying in excess of £9k a year for substandard education is simply scandalous when all it does is fund irrelevant projects and pay staff huge wages that they don't deserve. Priority should be given to the students and the courses rather than needless projects especially when youbget told by a lawyer specialising in education and academia that one module wasnt even worth the paper it is written on. I urge everyone to boycott this establishment as they don't care at all about you as they are only interested in receiving your money. What is worse is that the non academic staff who are supposed to be there for help are the worse especially those within the so-called "student services".

I couldn't ask for better university experience and am considering going back in a few years to do a masters! The lecturers are amazing and the people you meet there too!

Loved my time at LJMU admittedly I had times during my degrees that I really struggled but staff at LJMU were always there to offer support. One lecturer gave me her personal phone number so I could phone her if I needed to talk and several were simply there doors open for me to have a talk, cry and even sometimes a breakdown. Even since leaving they have remained in contact asking how my career is going and how I am. It is so lovely to meet lecturers who actually care and spend time getting to know the students!
