SOAS University of London is the only Higher Education institution in Europe specialising in the study of Asia, Africa and the Near and Middle East. SOAS is a remarkable institution. Uniquely combining language scholarship, disciplinary expertise and regional focus, it has the largest concentration in Europe of academic staff concerned with Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

On the one hand, this means that SOAS scholars grapple with pressing issues - democracy, development, human rights, identity, legal systems, poverty, religion, social change - confronting two-thirds of humankind while at the same time remaining guardians of specialised knowledge in languages and periods and regions not available anywhere else in the UK.

SOAS is synonymous with intellectual enquiry and achievement. As a global academic base and a crucial resource for London, SOAS is distinctively positioned to analyse, understand and explain some of the most challenging issues facing us in the world today. Our academic focus on the languages, cultures and societies of Africa, Asia and the Middle East makes us an indispensable interpreter in a complex world.

SOAS is top for teaching in London with a score of 90% (3% above the sector average) (National student survey 2016). 88% of students at SOAS are satisfied overall – up from 87% last year, equalling the highest recorded at SOAS and 2% points above the sector average. SOAS has more than 5,000 students from 133 countries on campus, and just over 50% per cent of them are from outside the UK. In addition, about 3,600 students around the world are taking one of our online and distance learning programmes.

More than 350 undergraduate degree combinations are available in social sciences, arts, humanities and languages, all with a distinctive regional focus and global relevance. And over 115 postgraduate programmes. SOAS offers an unparalleled range of non-European languages, all of which may be studied without prior knowledge. The school was awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize in 2009 for the excellence, breadth and depth of its language teaching. SOAS has the largest concentration of specialist staff (300+ academics) concerned with the study of Africa, Asia and the Middle East at any university in the world.

SOAS has over 115 postgraduate programmes taught on campus and a wide range of degrees, certificates and diplomas taught by distance learning, in the social sciences, humanities and languages, with a distinctive regional focus and global relevance. The SOAS Library – recently refurbished – has more than 1.5 million items and extensive electronic resources for the study of Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and attracts scholars from all around the world.

The School's Principal Officers are those covered under Standing Order IX that relates to the Senior Staff Remuneration Committee. The School's Executive Board also includes the Director of Human Resources and the Director of Finance and Planning.

Best Place in the world to study, I have studied at KCL too but nothing compares. Small Community University like no other, friends from every corner of the world, new cultures explored and most of all Wonderful World Class Professors who go out of their own way to help students.

I did my Masters degree here and loved it. The teaching is exceptional and your ability to work with a truly global team of students and professors is equally excellent.

Lectures are talented. Also, they have the energy and passion for their research field. The students possess the unique personalities and the liberal ideology. The campus, although small, is extremely warm. It is the best place to pursue the study of Asia and Africa; SOAS provides the many diverse programs for students.

I've visited quite a few universities and this is the only one that stood out as a massive disappointment. I am not satisfied to the courses provided, old facilities and unprofessional, rude staff. Always felt unwelcomed and mistreated. Please, save your time and avoid this terrible place.

A terrible institution. Studying here is my biggest mistake. Staff is always rude and not helpful at all. Thankfully, my course is joined with Birkbeck's university which turned out to be amazing in comparison to Soas. Do not recommend Soas to anyone, unless you want to feel disrespected all the time you enter the building.

Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy within SOAS is an amazing program for those interested in international relations, diplomacy or global energy and climate change. The students who study at the centre consist of some of the brightest and interesting individuals that the world has to offer. The curriculum is very diverse, including a theoretical approach, amazing practical skills trainings and an incredible trip to Geneva to visit the UN. My time at SOAS has been very happy and I highly recommend it.

The highest concentration of international students than any academic institutions in the world, SOAS University of London is a cultural hub, where world culture and traditions meet. World class academics and amazing students.

Great University where is promoted a critical approach to the majority of subjects. The professors are generally very engaged and available to their students. Student body is extremely diverse. Only point I would like to make is that the uni should invest more in its area of strength: e.g. the Africa Department (which was recently incorporated in 'languages and cultures'). The area focus on Africa has to be maintained because not only it was/is one of SOAS areas of excellence but because it is SOAS banner.
