Cal State East Bay has come a long way in the last 60+ years — it’s had six presidents, gone by five different names and produced thousands of graduates who have entered the region’s workforce.

The university was originally named the State College for Alameda County when it was officially established by the California State Assembly in 1957. The first academic year began in 1959 at Sunset High School in Cherryland with 25 faculty and 293 students. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the current Hayward Campus were held in February 1961 and the college moved to its permanent location in Fall 1963.

Cal State East Bay's three locations in the heart of California's beautiful San Francisco East Bay Area offer a wide range of degree and career path options. Classes at our Hayward Campus and Concord Center provide you with an exceptional opportunity to achieve your educational goals. All locations are accessible by major freeways and public transportation systems, including the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system. Campus shuttles run to and from the Hayward and Castro Valley BART stations, as well.

The California State University East Bay Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs) express a shared, campus-wide articulation of expectations for all degree recipients. Our ILOs define the broad areas of knowledge, skills, abilities, and values that graduates of CSUEB are expected to develop as a result of their general education, major studies, and co-curricular activities. Through development of the higher order capacities represented by the CSUEB ILOs, students acquire the habits of lifelong learning and community engagement that prepare them to effectively apply their skills personally and professionally.

The CSUEB ILOs

  • Thinking and Reasoning - Think critically and creatively and apply analytical and quantitative reasoning to address complex challenges and everyday problems.
  • Communication - Communicate ideas, perspectives, and values clearly and persuasively while listening openly to others.
  • Diversity - Apply knowledge of diversity and multicultural competencies to promote equity and social justice in our communities.
  • Collaboration - Work collaboratively and respectfully as members and leaders of diverse teams and communities.
  • Sustainability - Act responsibly and sustainably at local, national, and global levels.
  • Specialized Discipline - Demonstrate expertise and integration of ideas, methods, theory and practice in a specialized discipline of study.
