Along with its member institutions in the Atlanta University Center Consortium, Spelman shares cross-registration, the Woodruff Library, and a range of entertainment and engagement that complements anyone academic learning experience.Atlanta has the largest concentration of colleges and universities in the Southern U.S., as a matter of fact, and students from Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory University, Agnes Scott College, Georgia State University and Oglethorpe University are all encouraged to engage in a cultural and civic community. Founded in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary, we became Spelman College in 1924. The Robert W. Woodruff Library at Atlanta University Center is the recipient of a 2016 Excellence in Academic Libraries Award. Sponsored by the American Library Association and the Years Before Present Library Services, the award recognizes the staff of a college, university, and community college library for programs that deliver exemplary services and resources to further the educational mission of the institution.
The Robert W. Woodruff Library took the top honor in the university category, recognized for transformative change in innovative services and programs. The library will be presented with $3,000 and a plaque at an upcoming award ceremony in the AUC.
All students are encouraged to take advantage of the extensive world of science and math opportunities that Spelman offers. These special programs provide research opportunities and unique experiences that take science and math out of the classroom and into the real world.
The CURE program uses undergraduate academic research as a mechanism of student retention and engagement. We employ early career postdoctoral fellows and faculty teams to develop course-based research experiences (CRE) as a comprehensive institutional mechanism of student development. This project increases the quality and quantity of research opportunities available to Spelman students, as well as enhances the curriculum offerings related to STEM disciplines. This project is funded by the National Science Foundation’s HBCU-UP Implementation Projects Program.
Spelman students have extended their learning experience beyond the campus classroom through study abroad. Our students have traveled to over 40 countries including Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe and Latin America. We have partner institutions and organizations as well as relationships with exchange partnerships with universities in the West Indies, England, Czech Republic, Japan and Chile. Financial aid and scholarship assistance is available to support your study abroad experience.
