There is more to Ball State University than you may think. While we are proud of our roots as a Teachers College, we have grown far beyond them. Ball State is a world-class university. Our students and alumni are designing extreme weather shelters, providing animation for major motion pictures, hold key positions in major media and news organizations, and are winning songwriting competitions, to name just a few.
We empower faculty, staff, and students because responsibility is assumed. We encourage them to take risks because we believe failure is a step closer to success. We insist faculty and students be learning partners because we understand the quest for knowledge and greater understanding is a shared experience. They are given freedom and flexibility, and are expected to be engrossed and persistent. We know flying is challenging, but it's also exhilarating. So we foster a culture that believes in students, faculty, and staff, and we demand they believe in themselves.

Ball State’s tradition of innovation and entrepreneurship is rooted in the late 19th century, when Muncie business leaders envisioned a local college to help boost the city’s development. Among the visionaries were Frank C. Ball and his brothers, young New York industrialists who moved to Muncie looking to expand their glass container business. A small, private teacher training school opened 1899.
After the community’s efforts to sustain the college failed, the Ball brothers purchased the land and buildings of the defunct institution and donated them to the State of Indiana. This gift became the Indiana State Normal School Eastern Division, which opened in 1918 to meet Indiana’s need for more and better teachers. In recognition of the Ball family’s generosity, the Indiana General Assembly changed the school's name to Ball Teachers College in 1922 and then Ball State Teachers College in 1929. The winged statue Beneficence stands on the campus as a tribute to the family. This and other landmarks from Ball State's early years are featured in our historical walking tour of the Old Quadrangle.
Today, Ball State’s entrepreneurial spirit continues to shine through numerous expansions and additions of degree offerings, technological resources, immersive learning opportunities, community outreach projects, and state-of-the-art facilities. These investments are preparing bright students to take advantage of current and emerging job opportunities, meet society’s most pressing needs, and serve the communities in which they will live and work.

This is a great size school for someone going to college without a bunch of people from high school -- it's small enough that you get individual attention but big enough that there's plenty to get involved with and plenty of people to meet. I'm a shy person but had no problem making friends in the dorms and through Greek life. I agree with those who say it's much more fun after you're 21, but the university tries to provide fun things (free movies, Late Nite every Saturday, etc.) to keep those under 21 on campus during the weekends. Some of the buildings need work, but Ball State's put a lot of money into making the campus nicer in the past few weeks.

Ball State is a GREAT school. However, you have to give it a chance. As a freshman many students come in thinking they will automatically make friends, and be welcomed with open arms by the faculty...but it's not that way at all. You have to work at having both an academic and social life. Afterall, this is college, not high school.
Get involved on campus and within your department. BSU Faculty is ALWAYS very open to helping their students...well except for those few 'angry at life' professors...but every school has a few of those. Some of the classes, and coursework is a joke, but once you get deep into your major you will hopefully find it as challenging and fulfilling as I did. (I was a psychology major)
As far as a social life...well Muncie doesn't have much a "social scene" in fact-most of the time you have to make your own fun. On the other hand, BSU has one million opportunities to meet people, so don't just sit in your dorm room!! My experience was amazing at Ball State and I wouldn't take back a minute of it. The coursework prepared me for graduate school and I felt like every penny of the mighty expensive tuition was well worth it!

Got my undergraduate degree in Computer Science from Ball State. Really had a great time there and came out more than prepared for my career. I am now self employed and working on a masters degree and realize how well BSU had prepared me for it, even after 12 years out. Muncie is not a great city, but Ball State's campus itself is beautiful, so don't rule it out because of the surrounding city.

I Looove Ball State, the social scene is amazing, parties every night. the campus is very beautiful, and they are adding stuff all the time, the new $21 million dollar David Letterman communications building is amazing. The univeristy is the perfect size, not too big, and not too small, youre not just a number, faculty actually care and try to help you with whatever they can.
