Ohio University Southern’s commitment to serving Southeast Ohio began in 1956, holding its first classes at Ironton High School for cadet teachers. Educational needs grew in the late 1970s and continued through the 1980s. The first campus building was completed in 1985. Almost thirty years later, we now have four academic buildings located on campus, a horse park that is home to our equine program, a center located in Proctorville, and a child development center located in Hanging Rock. We are very proud of our history and look forward to new and exciting opportunities in the future.
Students attending Ohio University Southern have over thirty degree and certificate programs from which to choose. As a result of such broad offerings, our graduates become teachers, nurses, health care administrators, television news anchors, law enforcement personnel, community leaders, childcare providers, and other respected professionals.
Our community members play a pivotal role at Ohio University Southern, serving on advisory councils, attending special campus events, serving as student mentors, and volunteering in a variety of important campus functions. We appreciate the contributions that our community members provide to enhance the success of our campus. Their involvement is an invaluable campus asset and we are extremely grateful to have them as partners. In addition, we also collaborate with local employers and community colleges to provide our students with enhanced educational opportunities.

We want to make your first year at OUS an outstanding one. First-year students may participate in learning communities to help them transition to college life.
Each community consists of two linked courses sharing a common theme. Students take these courses with other freshmen to have the opportunity to share ideas and build friendships as they become acclimated to the campus.
Road trips to Athens for football and basketball games, cultural and social events, and concerts are just a few of the special events planned for first-year students.
Academic and social opportunities for first-year students focus on increasing academic success. Courses are available on academic planning, motivation, test taking, time management, study skills, leadership skills, and utilizing computer resources.
Community Education classes are open to the general public regardless of educational background. These classes are self-supporting, and the fees collected from Community Education cover all instructional, administrative, and overhead cost of the program.
