I am a Junior at Black Hills State University. I absolutely love attending BHSU for many reasons. The faculty, staff, and students at BHSU tend to be very friendly and helpful; this makes understanding course material and developing a social life very easy. There are so many resources on campus (like one-on-one help from professors, free math tutors & math lab, writing assistance, etc.) for students that can help students understand and exceed in their classes. Also, there is an abundant supply of activities for students to experience; many of these are available through the campus student organizations, while others are simply fun things that go on in the community.

BHSU is a great school for business and teaching degrees and the science department is expanding. The music department is heavily neglected financially and otherwise, as well as theatre and pretty much all fine arts. There is little school spirit, though the students are very friendly and the atmosphere on campus is very positive.BH is a great small school and is located in a fantastic small town, Spearfish,on the fringe of the beautiful Black Hills. BH doesn't have everything, but if location and atmosphere are part of your decision, BHSU will bring great satisfaction.

I am going to be a senior at BHSU and I love the school and the area. I am majoring in Photography and Journalism and the professors I have had are very knowledgeable and friendly. The photography professors are some of the best teachers I have ever had. I am a member of the dance team and a club called Campus Ventures. It is very easy for students to get involved in some type of organization at BHSU. There are clubs for almost anything you are interested in. I myself am not an "outdoorsy" person but I still enjoy the Spearfish area. There are things to do in the town even if you don't like hiking or snow activities. The only negative thing I would say about the school is there is not a lot of school spirit from the students. But overall BHSU is a great place with friendly people all around.

I am a Junior at BHSU majoring in Elementary Education. I am from a small town in Nebraska and was first drawn to the Black Hills because it did not feel "crowded" even though Spearfish is still a nice sized town. BHSU is located in the perfect spot. If you enjoy the outdoors there are plenty of opportunities to take part in that experience. We are only 45 minutes from Rapid City where you can go shopping and enjoy many dining options and 15 miles from Deadwood where you can have fun and take in the old streets and buildings. The campus and atmosphere are beautiful and very welcoming. The professors are friendly and always willing to help as long as you ask for it. I could have gone to a college closer to home that would have cost less but I felt "at home" at BHSU the moment I stepped onto the campus.

I am a Freshman at Black Hills State University where I am currently taking my pre-nursing general courses. Black Hills State has offered me many things that I was looking for in a school. It has a great location that is beautiful, and is a decent size. When I meet someone new I know that I will see them again, where in other schools half the time it is very unlikely that you will ever run into them again. The classes are average in size so that you meet new people in your classes, and your professors get to know you by name. Black Hills State has many extracurricular activities that you can partake in, and many things around the area that are also very enjoyable.
