Texas Lutheran University students experience a challenging academic environment that sets a path for lifelong learning. We’re bold, sincere, hardworking and committed. At TLU, we look for future Bulldogs who are intellectually curious and who have a serious interest in being involved and giving back.Texas Lutheran University is a community of learning and a community of faith.
Founded in 1891, TLU resides on 184 scenic acres in Seguin, Texas, near San Antonio and Austin. A diverse student body of approximately 1,300 with classes averaging fewer than 20 students provides a sense of community and an environment where individuality and personal growth are as integral to success as rigorous academics.
As a community of learning, the university stresses the liberating potential of the disciplined pursuit of academic excellence within the context of academic freedom. Its faculty and staff seek to engage each student in a process of self-education which will assist him or her in developing as an informed and resourceful person in today's rapidly changing world. It provides an academic program based upon the tradition of the liberal arts and designed to serve a diversified community.
As a community of faith, the university celebrates the liberating power of gospel as applied to the whole of human life. The biblical vision of the world as created, judged, redeemed and fulfilled by God in Christ is rich in significance for the work and hopes of persons today. It is the unique privilege and responsibility of the Christian university to explore these implications freely and boldly. Thus it leads the church to face the challenge of new insights and to formulate fresh means of creative service.
As an institution of the church, the university provides an education in the arts and sciences that is given perspective by the Christian faith. This function is carried out through a curriculum leading to undergraduate and select graduate degrees. The university encourages students to participate in service work tied to reflective discussions about its place in their lives.
In working to bring learning and faith into intimate relationship, Texas Lutheran University is discovering afresh that each can strengthen, clarify and enrich the other. Men and women who live and work in these contexts find their own purposes enlarged and deepened. A compassion born of faith and a competence informed by learning shape the mission of the university in this day.
TLU education encourages students to learn boldly and live to inspire. We seek to achieve these components through a broad general education curriculum we call Compass. This curriculum incorporates knowing, doing and becoming through key competencies: depth in a major field of study and co-curricular experiences that build on classroom learning.
While the mission never changes, we are continuously striving to improve the TLU experience. Investments such as Centennial Hall, our new freshmen residence hall, and the new athletic complex have transformed the campus. Students’ academic choices are growing through new majors in nursing, biochemistry and an innovative program in social entrepreneurship. We also are adding support for internships and study abroad—two of the most valuable college
experiences.
Students must be accepted at TLU in order to be considered for a scholarship and must enroll full-time in order to receive and renew the award. Grant and scholarship aid (federal, state and external) when combined with TLU awards may not exceed the cost of attendance for the year which you are applying. Academic, performance and participation awards in combination, where applicable, may not exceed the cost of full-time tuition for the year which you are applying for aid.
At TLU, learning doesn't stop when you leave the classroom. We take the social aspect of college life to the next level and create an environment where activities meet academics. There's a little something here to interest every student and make TLU a community that feels like home.
When you come to TLU, you’ll discover your passion and talents and you’ll learn how to use those talents to make a meaningful impact outside the classroom. We’ll challenge you with unique academic experiences, while encouraging you to get involved with campus life activities and social organizations.
We build relationships. Honor societies, academic organizations, Greek fraternities and sororities, professional organizations, intramural sports, service and social organizations, Campus Ministry and music and theatre groups are all part of the TLU spirit and culture of community, learning and service.
We're committed to making sure every TLU student has access to not only support services, but a support system. From campus safety measures to academic support, students and parents alike can be assured that there is someone working to meet the needs of students so they can be successful during their time at TLU.
The Counseling and Disabilities Office at TLU supports development and success of students by providing services in an atmosphere of respect and confidentiality. We are committed to providing reasonable and appropriate accommodations to eligible students. We value the diversity of our student body and the worth and dignity of each individual and collaborate with faculty and staff to increase the level of awareness of disabilities in the university community.
