UAE: The College of Engineering in United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) organized the 4th Engineering Student Renewable Energy Competition, with the participation of 54 teams from 11 universities from inside and outside the country including Ajman University, American University in Dubai, BITS Pilani in Dubai, Khalifa University, The Petroleum Institute, Manibal University in Dubai, Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain, Jubail Industrial College in Saudi Arabia, Rochester Institute of Technology in Dubai, University of Sharjah and United Arab Emirates University .
Prof. Reyadh Almehaideb, Dean of the College of Engineering opened the competition and spoke about the importance of finding clean & renewable energy sources whilst highlighting the UAE’s efforts to reduce energy emissions and save the environment. “Following the global vision, our government is looking to increase the reliance on renewable energy and therefore has set a plan to generate 7% of energy in Abu Dhabi by 2030, and 5% in Dubai. These efforts have already begun to take place with the inauguration of the Shams 1 Project by H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi , and Enpark in Dubai by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, which currently generates 10 megawatts and will generate approximately 1,000 megawatts after 20 years.”
Dr. Almehaideb stressed that “The global trend today is to move towards finding alternative sources of clean energy, and this will not be achieved without conducting a lot of studies and research, where the responsibility partly falls on the colleges, academics and students. Here today, UAEU is contributing to finding solutions to these problems faced globally, so I would like to thank the students from all the universities for their participation, and give a special thanks to ADNOC – the exclusive sponsor of the competition, whom without their support, we would not be able to achieve this.”
Dr. Hassan Hejase, Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department and coordinator of the competition explained that 15 experts from various engineering and industrial sectors will evaluate the students projects and innovations in energy before choosing the winners.
It was also mentioned on the day that the College of Engineering is in a process of opening a centre for Energy and Environmental research, where clean energy research will be a top priority.
