8 Easy Steps to Learn How to Play the Violin

The violin is one of the most beautiful and rewarding instruments to play. Learning how to  play the violin can be a long process but with discipline, enthusiasm, and patience, you can  easily begin producing beautiful sounds and melodies with this versatile musical instrument .

Get the Essential Equipment
Choosing your own violin is crucial in getting ready to master the art. A violin comes in different sizes, contingent upon the student’s age. Normally when you buy a violin, it includes a violin case, violin bow, and violin rosin. Other equipment such as a violin shoulder rest, violin mute, and music stand will also prove to be useful.

Once you’re all set with your equipment, you’re ready to learn how to play the violin. Follow this step-by-step guide:

1. Fix the bow

Once you’ve set up the music stand and the sheet music, open the violin case and take out the bow. Fix the bow hair by turning the end screw clockwise until the space between the hair and stick is sufficiently enormous to pass a pencil through neatly from tip to tip.

2. Rosin the bow

Rosin is available in two types, light and dark, either is fine to utilize and neither of them is costly. Hold the rosin by papered sides gently yet energetically rub it here and there along the length of the bow hair three or more times. You should rosin your bow each time you practice.

3. Tune the violin

Put the bow aside for a minute and remove the violin from the case. The strings, all together from the lowest tone to the highest, have to be tuned to G, D, An, and E.

4. Grasp the bow

Utilize the balance point to figure out how to hold the bow and level out the load. Place the tip of the pinky on the flat stick part close to the base, keeping it somewhat bent. The ring and center fingers should rest with their center parts in accordance with the tip of the pinky, and their tips in the frog side.

5. Hold the violin

Stand or sit with a straight back. Lift it up by its neck with your left hand and bring the butt of the instrument up to the neck. Rest the lower back of the violin on the collarbone and hold the set up with your jaw.

6. Perfect the hand position

Place your hand under the neck part and support the violin so the parchment is up far from you. Hold it by resting the side of your thumb on the neck, and enable your four fingers to curve over the fingerboard.

7. Play the strings

Place the level side of the bow hair around somewhere between the fingerboard and the bridge, with the goal that it’s specifically over the stomach (front body) of the violin. Force the bow along the string as straight as possible, parallel to bridge, applying some pressure. A sound ought to exude from the violin.

8. Practice, Practice, and Practice

At last, the most important point to remember when you learn how to play the violin. Develop a good habit of practice. Nurturing a habit of good practice will enhance your learning. It is important to rehearse daily, for at least 20 to 30 minutes a day if you can, as opposed to rehearsing just once per week. You will take in your violin method quicker if you begin with the practice daily. Listen intently to what you are going for, regardless of whether it is the sound, phrasings, or articulations.
