Did you know that an average business professional has 30 to 100 projects? The amount of distraction each modern worker face is at least 2.1 hours a day. Four out of 10 people face uncertainty about their future due to anticipated corporate restructuring. These are just some of the reasons why 40% of adults are stressed with work.
This leads us to the question: “Is there a way to maintain steady focus throughout the day?” It seems not possible to do everything that needs to be done and still have energy left after work? Can you keep your cool even after so many demands? Here are a few strategies to take work stress down.
When we feel that situations are out of our control, that’s when we experience stress. The so called stress hormone is activated and it drags our confidence, well-being and concentration down. To fight this feeling, you need to identify those forces that are beyond your control and let go of them.
After an intense meeting, you can clear your head by breathing deeply for minutes. It will restore balance. Inhale for five seconds, hold, and exhale through the nose. This is basically what they do in yoga when you focus on breathing. You can do a 90-minute yoga class at your desk.
Instant messages, pop ins, phone calls, emails – these all distract us from being productive at work. You cannot control these but you can take control of your response. How to deal with it? First, accept the interruption. Second, cut it off. Third, weigh its importance and make a plan on how to respond. You can answer emails at a certain time in the office. You can close the door when you need to focus.
If we work full 8-10 hours a day and push ourselves to the limit, we may think that we are productive but actually not. You will have very little energy left for your family after work. Schedule breaks throughout the day just to walk, stretch, or do some breathing exercise. If we concentrate for an hour and a half, we can clear stress build up and rejuvenate.
If you don’t eat healthy, it will stress your system. Eat a low sugar, high protein diet. You should rejuvenate when you sleep. If you’re having difficulty sleeping because of thoughts, do this simple technique in breathing. Breathe through left nostril while covering right. Do this for three to five minutes and you will fall asleep.
Stressful office events are just subjective interpretation of the story. Step back, see the situation in an objective manner and don’t take thinks personally. This way, you’ll be more effective.
Instead of immediately reacting when you’re angry, you should practice cooling down breathing. Breathe out normally through your nose like you’re sipping using a straw. This will calm the person down.
Build your own self confidence than seek other’s approval all the time. Don’t be too caught up in other’s perception of yourself. Shift your attention to your work than the perception of others to your work. You will succeed in your task.
Define what is on top of the list and important before you do anything. Understand your role in the organization and go on from there. Review your to-do list and identify priorities based on your personal goals and company’s goals.
If you tend to panic a lot, the tendency is for you to lose time and become nervous instead of being effective. Reduce your anxiety with the right acupressure point. To regulate blood pressure, put your thumb on the side of your middle finger and apply pressure.
Taking care of yourself doesn’t require a total lifestyle overhaul. Even small things can lift your mood, increase your energy, and make you feel like you’re back in the driver’s seat. Take things one step at a time, and as you make more positive lifestyle choices, you’ll soon notice a reduction in your stress levels, both at home and at work.
Eating badly will stress your system. Eat a low-sugar, high protein diet. Sleep well to get rejuvenated the next day.
