For nearly a century, the Institute of International Education (IIE) has been a world leader in international education. We work to build more peaceful and equitable societies by advancing scholarship, building economies and promoting access to opportunity. As a not-for-profit with 18 offices and affiliates worldwide, IIE collaborates with a range of corporate, government and foundation partners across the globe to design and manage scholarship, study abroad, workforce training and leadership development programs. IIE was founded in 1919 by three Nobel Prize winners who shared a simple conviction: international education creates the foundation for lasting peace.

IIE is governed by a dedicated Board of Trustees, a diverse group of advisory boards and an experienced executive staff that bring experience from a variety of fields. In its work around the world, IIE's global offices and experienced staff have developed significant expertise, capabilities and best practices in a set of core areas.

Through the years, IIE has established a diverse set of honors to celebrate the achievements and leadership of individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to international education. Our approach to international education—diverse, borderless, impactful—is a proven way for governments and organizations to invest in global talent and solidify overseas relationships. Our programs extend our clients’ reach to more than 180 countries around the world, and our robust networks include thousands of universities, government partners, NGOs, and leading companies.

IIE is honored to manage programs like the Fulbright U.S. Student, Foreign Student, U.S. Scholar and Visiting Scholar component of the Fulbright Program - the flagship exchange program of the U.S. Department of State. Meaningful partnerships help knowledge and human expression thrive across borders. IIE creates cross-border connections between higher education institutions, faculty, and students to cultivate research collaboration, foster diplomacy, build capacity and exchange ideas through programs like the International Academic Partnership Program (IAPP).

IIE implements professional development and training programs that improve lives, strengthen communities, and promote economic and social development, such as the Humphrey Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and administered by IIE.
