Medical Emergencies in the Ward Environment

Course summary:

Course Description: This course is designed for nurses interested in recognizing and managing the patient that is suffering a medical emergency in the ward environment

Target audience: Any staff nurse working in a ward environment

Learning objectives:

• Learn about the different types of medical emergencies
• Assessment of the patient suffering a medical emergency
• Nursing interventions according to findings
• Preparation of the patient for further interventions
• Communicate efficiently to other health care professionals and the patient
• Handing over the patient in a standardized manner (SBAR)

Programme:

• Review of concepts from literature
• Get to know the human patient simulator and equipment
• Demonstration session
• Simulation sessions that will include the following: collapsed patient, patient suffering shortness of breath, confused patient, patient suffering chest pain, patient complaining of ‘not feeling right’
• Debriefing
