Louvre Abu Dhabi: 15 Things You Need to Know

Since its conception back in 2007, the Louvre Abu Dhabi finally opened its doors to the public on November 11, 2017. The first universal museum in the Arab region brought together treasured artwork from every corner of the world.

Planning to visit the museum soon? Here are some of the details you shouldn’t miss about the Louvre Abu Dhabi:

1. Timings

The Louvre Abu Dhabi is open from 10 am to 8 pm (Saturdays to Wednesdays); 10 am to 10 pm (Thursdays and Fridays)

2. Tickets

You can buy tickets for 60 AED. For those aged between 13-22 years old can buy tickets at 30 AED only. Members of this museum in Abu Dhabi have free access to the museum, as well as children aged under 13 years, members of the International Council of Museums, International Council on Monuments and Sites, disabled persons, and journalists.

3. Location

The Louvre is located on Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi. You can take the following routes:

From Abu Dhabi

Take Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Highway (E12) from Corniche Road or Hamdan Bin Mohammed Street or Zayed the First Street. Take the exit right after Sheikh Khalifa Bridge to the museum.

From Dubai

Start on the Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Road (E11) and take Abu Dhabi-Shahama Road (E10). Switch to Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Highway and take exit before Sheikh Khalifa Bridge. You can get a taxi from Abu Dhabi city (30-40 AED) or ride a Bus 192 and 193 to reach your destination.

4. Parking & Taxi

Parking and valet options are available. Taxi slots are also there. Meanwhile, public bus service 94 is also available for commuters.

6. Artworks & Exhibits

About 600 exhibits are available in the museum. Some of the artworks on display are the self-portrait by Vincent Van Gogh; Children Wrestling by Paul Gauguin; and La Belle Ferronnière by Leonardo da Vinci.

7. Cafés

You need to gain an entry ticket to get access to the café.

8. Time

Did you know that you would take at least an hour and a half to walk around the 12 galleries? Don’t worry; there will also be guides available in every corner of the museum.

9. Guided tours

Guided tours are available every 15 minutes for 45 minutes to let people know about the artworks and exhibits.

10. Families & children

The museum will feature family-focused exhibitions and interactive workshops for children and families -the family tour “My First Visit to Louvre Abu Dhabi”

11. Souvenirs

You can get novelty items of Louvre Abu Dhabi and its exhibits in the souvenir shop.

12. Coat & Luggage Check-In

Guests also have the option to check in their coats and luggage inside the museum.

13. Membership club

If you’re interested to become a member, prepare at least 450 AED to 1,500 AED for an exclusive access to exhibition previews, partner museums, and 15% discount at the café. More info can be found here.

14. Temporary exhibits

A total of 4 exhibitions per year will be held in the museum. The first one is expected to begin on December 21, 2017, titled “From one Louvre to Another”.

15. Design & Architecture

The genius behind the dome of Louvre is Architect Jean Nouvel. He took inspiration from the low-lying settlements and medinas of the Arab world. It resembles a medina floating in the sea. The dome has a weight of 7,500 tonnes and was constructed back in 2009.
