Dubai, UAE: As part of the Dell EMC Academic Alliance Programme, Middlesex University Dubai’s Computer Engineering and Informatics (CEI) Department – headed by Dr. Fehmida Hussain – and Dell EMC have collaborated in several engagement activities to offer  students a unique mix of academia-industry learning experiences.

The activities compromised of a 2-week training course in cloud infrastructure services, a 2-week training in big data science and analytics, a 1-day Digital Transformation Bootcamp, and a field trip to Dell EMC’s customer solution centre.

The ‘Dell EMC Digital Transformation Bootcamp’ headed by Eng. Hisham Arafat from Dell-EMC was held on Thursday 8 February 2018. The one-day event brought together the concepts, principles and practices of IoT, Machine Learning and Big Data.

In an age where the internet has become a necessity, digital communication is no longer limited to just computers and handheld mobile devices. Technologies have expanded beyond the realm of traditional computing, finding their way into household appliances, industrial equipment and public utilities, among others. This rapid revolution of ‘Internet of Things’ brings along advancements in cloud computing, big data science and analytics, and infrastructure management.

Dr. Cedwyn Fernandes, Director of Middlesex University Dubai said, “ We would like to thank Mrs. Marwa Zaghaw for her continuous support to the Academic Alliance Programme between Middlesex University Dubai and Dell EMC.” He further added, “ This has been a great opportunity for our students, and the rich learning experience has sparked an interest in future professional events by the department in collaboration with Dell EMC.”

The Bootcamp began with a session on the current status of IoT, the ways by which rapidly expanding technology can be further developed, prevailing professional IoT infrastructure and architecture, as well as best practices in the field. This was followed  by a practical workshop session with demonstration of how IoT technology can enable remote management of devices and laboratory equipment.

The event concluded with an award ceremony for those who had finished the IoT Bootcamp, as well as those who had participated in Dell-EMC’s courses during the past academic year – the Cloud Infrastructure and Services (CIS) course and the Data Science and Big Data Analytics course, which were both carried out by esteemed professors of Middlesex University. Additional certificates were awarded to the six students who passed the CIS Associate-level certification exam, led by top-scorer Joseph Limeta, a 2nd Year student from the University’s BEng Computer Systems Engineering programme.

Around 20 students from the CEI department got the chance to go on a field trip to Dell EMC’s customer solution centre on Feb 20, 2018. Students enjoyed an interactive session, delivered by Mr. Maged Ghorieb, where they got a hands-on experience on infrastructures and solutions from Dell EMC. The students explored different types of servers, networks, and storage.
