It was founded in 1919 as a counterpart to Charles University in Prague, named after T. G. Masaryk, the first President of Czechoslovakia.
Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk (7 March 1850–14 September 1937) was an Austro-Hungarian and Czechoslovak politician, sociologist and philosopher, who as an eager advocate of Czechoslovak independence during World War I became the founder and first President of Czechoslovakia.
In 2010 Masaryk University became the first Czech institution to hold the European Credit Transfer System Label, a certificate issued by the European Commission as proof of the university’s high educational standards and a guarantee of the correct implementation of the credit system in all Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes. Adoption of this system helped support the internationalization efforts, which resulted in an increase in the number of international students, who now make up about 20 % of all students.
Our online award-winning Information System (IS) is one of the things we are most proud of. It facilitates the entire administration process by reducing superfluous paperwork. Enrolment, scholarships applications, course registration, and many other procedures can be done online, from your home computer, with just a click. It is very popular among students and serves as inspiration to many other universities – not only Czech ones. Research is one of the top priorities of Masaryk University. The university intensively cooperates with acknowledged international universities and research institutions. Its scientists and scholars have gained wide international recognition in various fields.
A key role in research activities is played by the CEITEC – The Central European Institute of Technology. It is a consortium of six partners including the most prominent universities and research institutes in Brno. Its laboratories for nearly 600 scientists and more than 1,200 students, equipped with first-class technologies, create optimal conditions for both basic and applied research in the fields of life sciences, advanced materials and technologies.
We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to work at MU, regardless of age, gender, social status or medical condition. We provide students with experience, support graduates launching their first careers and help mothers on maternity leave balance work and family.
