Kookmin University established in 1946 with the aim of training leaders to rebuild the nation. Meeting that need has been the longstanding vision of Kookmin University. Mr. Shin, Ik Hee, who was one of the founding members of the University, became the the first President of Kookmin. He later went on to serve as the first House Speaker of the National Assembly.Kookmin University, the first private university after Korea’s independence, was established by Mr. Shin, Ik Hee and other main members of the Shanghai interim government of Korea.
Deeply rooted in the four founding principles, humanism, nationalism, culturalism, and industrialism that Mr. Kim, Sung Gon emphasized, Kookmin University has grown into a fixture of the academia of Korea with 24,000 students enrolled.
In the midst of the ever changing academic climate and social changes, with selfless dedication from all members of KMU, we strive to become a globally recognized institute by making a world of academia unique to none other than KMU as well as being bold to the changes and challenges ahead.
Now universities of a knowledge base society have entered into a competition that is more severe than ever before. KMU is trying to solidify its educational foundation to maintain its role as a leading player by employing three operative goals such as attracting outside funding, establishing the standards of reasonable distribution of resources, and building an efficient structural system.
In 1959, Mr. Kim, Sung Gon, founder of the Ssangyong Corporation, took over the Kookmin Foundation and led remarkable developments of the university. His educational philosophy was to bring up leaders who can contribute to the modernization of Korea. Since then, Kookmin University has endeavored to achieve this goal.
Surrounded by the Bukhansan National Park, Kookmin University boasts a clean and green environment complimented by the most up-to-date educational facilities. Currently, Kookmin University consists of 24,000 students, 700 faculty, and 300 staff members with 13 colleges and 13 graduate schools.
Kookmin University is one of the leading private universities in Korea, with a total of 14 various colleges and 14 postgraduate schools. Our university’s educational goal is to foster leaders not only for our country but for the world. We do our best to provide students with a global perspective and with opportunities to experience the world academically, culturally, and professionally.
We have established official sisterhood relationships with 371 universities in 55 different countries: With each of these we exchange students and faculty members, hold academic symposiums, conduct joint research, and share information, and materials. We support our faculty members’ involvement in international academic activities, including research projects, presentations, attendance of symposiums and seminars, and the publishing of research papers in foreign journals.
For our students, we provide opportunities to visit foreign countries to study language and culture, participate in professional training programs and to compete in international competitions. In addition, every student is required to take an English course from native speaking lecturers in their freshman year. We have welcomed visiting professors and students from our sister universities in the fields of international studies, economics, Chinese language and literature, fashion design, ceramic art, visual communication design, music, and the performing arts.

Bukaksan Mountain Bukhansan Mountain is as picturesque as a folding screen.
Spring, summer, fall and winter, the eyes change in color.Have fun and take a healing walk!Your head will become clear and refreshed.It's not too big or too small, but it's cozy and has great scenery.Good, there are a lot of good talent at my alma mater, Kookmin University.I hope it comes out!

Kookmin university is one of the great universities in South Korea, so at that time I stayed at a goshiwon near the Kookmin campus in Jeongneung-ro. I went for a walk here and it was amazing.

This is my university. I'm a PhD working at the integrated system laboratory electrical department. The university environment is very friendly and most of professors are very kindly. During 4 years i have studied a lot of things involving semiconductor and integrated circuit design as well. Financial supports form kookmin university, government and companies are very essential and helpful for my research. Thank all.

I've been studying there for 2 semesters, it was the best year of my life so far. Every student I met there are very kind, friendly and also good-looking. If you go to Kookmin university, be careful because you are in danger of wanting to stay. They have a tea class in a traditional house that will make you experience the real Korean culture. In every festival, the school invites many famous singers, each major and student clubs organizes pubs in-campus so students can get to meet new friends and get along better. It has a great variety of student clubs, do not be afraid to join, even if you do not know Korean, they will help you. The campus has been the place where many dramas and television shows have been recorded as Entertainer and Running Man. Also, the beautiful Campus will make you fall in love, specially during spring and fall. You can see the first snow in Seoul there since Kookmin University is located in a mountain and they have lovely cats as a pet?

Although it is not in a university town, the building design was very efficient and beautiful. And since it is next to Bukhansan Mountain, it is nice to see the forest scenery in the city.

I think it is the most Korean university. The atmosphere is very nice. The design department is the second best in Korea after Seoul National University.
