At John Perry, we strive to ensure that every child succeeds to the best of their ability. We provide all of our children with a broad and balanced education, which fosters a love of learning for life. We encourage children to nurture their gifts and talents through a stimulating curriculum and a range of enrichment activities. We have a dynamic team of staff who model exemplary practice across all areas of the school. Our children are provided with outstanding role models. We take pride in educating and nurturing each child, enabling them to achieve high standards of academic attainment whilst also enabling them to become capable, caring and confident human beings. At John Perry Primary, we provide the best opportunities for learning for all our pupils. We ensure that every child is supported so that they can become the citizens of tomorrow.

At John Perry, all our pupils are encouraged to take an increasing responsibility for their learning. We want to equip our pupils with confidence, resilience and independence so that they are best prepared for the next steps in their learning journey. We are committed to creating a culture of high expectations, with the ambition and drive to succeed prevalent amongst all members of our school community.

Our school curriculum is based on partnership learning with parents and carers. We believe that children learn best through direct experience, linking their learning at school with the support from parents and carers at home. We’ve developed a curriculum that stimulates enthusiasm, captures interest and provides broad learning opportunities for pupils of all abilities. At John Perry Primary School we aim to deliver a curriculum that is broad, balanced and based on developing all pupils’ knowledge, skills and understanding across a range of subjects. We are determined that all children succeed and reach high standards and believe in a rich curriculum that is engaging for all.

Reading, Writing and Maths are at the heart of our curriculum and take up the larger part of teaching time. RE and PSHE are taught using the Local Authority schemes of work. Modern Languages are taught in KS2. All other subjects; History, Geography, Music, Art, Design Technology, Science and PE are taught through an integrated topic approach.

We promote continuous self-reflection in our practice; we instil a desire for constant improvement amongst our staff and children. We deliver inspired teaching that encourages positive attitudes towards lifelong learning. We want our children to feel valued and confident as individuals and ensure they feel supported, safe and cared for in our school. We aim that children leave John Perry with a love for learning, a clear sense of responsibility and independence and an understanding of the importance of community and how their behaviour impacts upon others.

Our pupils will encounter rules and laws throughout their entire lives. We want our pupils to understand that whether these laws govern the class, the school, the community or the country, they are set for good reasons and must be adhered to. The involvement of our pupils in the creation of the school rules, that are fair and reasonable, helps them to understand the reasons behind the rules and the consequences if they are broken.

Pupils are taught from Reception the rules of the school i.e. School Rules, Playground Rules, Dinner Hall Rules and they are also encouraged to be role models throughout the school. In individual classes, pupils discuss various rules and the importance of following them. The understanding of the importance of rules will be consistently reinforced through assemblies and our curriculum. Throughout the year we also welcome visits from members of the wider community including police, the fire brigade and many more, this helps reinforce this message.

John Perry Primary is a diverse school and we actively promote diversity through our celebrations of different faiths and cultures. Religious Education lessons, RE themed weeks and PSHE lessons reinforce messages of tolerance and respect for others. Our multicultural activities illustrate our commitment to exploring our diverse school community. Members of different faiths and religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school. Examples of this are, the celebration of Black History Month, our Islamic week awareness week, the celebration of Christian festivals throughout the year, the celebration of the Chinese New Year through themed activities and raising awareness of the Hindu faith through understanding about Diwali, the Festival of Light.

At John Perry Primary, we encourage children to make the right choices based upon respect for others. As a school, we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely, through provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons. Pupils are given important roles in school, such as School Councilors, corridor guides and a variety of pupil responsibilities throughout the school. Pupils are also encouraged to understand responsibility in school in terms of behaviour and attitude to learning.
