1. No Judgement

You can’t avoid prejudice and a little judgement from your co-workers due to cultural difference and their perception of America – the land of opportunity. Though some would throw a shade or give a side eye, there are still more Chinese people who are neutral and positive.

They look at America as a developed nation and actually know a thing or two about American culture. However, it would be helpful if you research on Chinese culture prior to your trip.

2. Chinese Food in America is nothing compared to authentic

Most Americans are obsessed with Chinese food – oriental food that comes in handy takeaway boxes and a pair of chopsticks. Authentic Chinese food is still best served in its home country. There’s also a wider range of Chinese food in China as different provinces have their own delicacies.

3. Pollution Level is real

Pollution is a big problem in China. When out and about the streets of China, a thick construction mask is your best friend.

4. Buy Air Purifiers

Investing in a good air purifier is a good choice if you want to live and work in China. You can put it inside your cubicle or apartment, where you spend most of your time.

5. Unlocked Smartphone

Once you’re in China, you can see that most people text, chat, and send voice messages through WeChat. It’s like WhatsApp but more popular in China. You can use this professionally and to stay in touch with your friends and family.

6. You Have to Pay for Tea

In China, tea is not free and you have to pay for it. What’s surprising is that some restaurants in the mainland don’t even have them.
It’s not something that’s automatically served; rather, you have to ask for it.

7. Free VPN is not reliable

VPNs do work, but it’s slow. You can’t connect to it all the time. If you want to stay connected all the time, you may have to pay for VPN.

8. Chinese is a hard language to learn

Some people say Chinese is a language you can easily pick up. However, it’s actually not that simple. It has a different grammar structure compared to English language and you actually have to spend years to be proficient.

9. The government is not oppressive

You will hear plenty of negative news about China’s oppressive government and human rights abuse that most people. Don’t worry because this will not happen to expat or foreign teachers.

However, you must also follow the rules set out by the government to avoid getting in trouble. Don’t steal, don’t get drunk and fight.

10. Coffee can be costly

Other types of food (imported) and coffee are more expensive than in America. Expect to pay three times more for items such as coffee, cheese, peanut butter, and cereal.
