Northwood is a friendly, happy, welcoming school where young people are enabled to make excellent academic progress and develop the knowledge, skills, qualities and values required to lead successful and fulfilling adult lives. As a relatively small secondary school, we are uniquely placed to care for each child as an individual. Ofsted gave its highest rating to the quality of our care, guidance and support, and commented that we provide an "exceptionally caring and secure environment where every student is empowered to succeed."
Our relentless focus on ensuring the highest academic standards has consistently placed us at the top of the School Performance Tables, and our examination outcomes place us well above the national averages for student attainment and progress. In addition to providing the highest quality teaching for successful learning in lessons, we are passionate about providing excellent enrichment opportunities beyond the classroom, so that all of our students have a rewarding and enjoyable time with us as they develop their interests and talents.
Our Aims:
We also pride ourselves on our outstanding pastoral care, providing a very positive environment in which students thrive. If your child comes to Northwood School, they will be joining a strong and caring community with an emphasis on high achievement coupled with personalised support and encouragement at all times.
Northwood School has an ethos of ambition and achievement for all its students. As a school we put our students at the heart of everything we do.We are a caring community where every student is known and valued as an individual. As a consequence this allows every child to flourish in a friendly and safe environment. We wish to empower our students to recognise and value their individuality so that they grow in self-worth and play a full role in shaping their own futures
Northwood School encourages and promotes respect for, understanding of, different groups within our school community and in society. We are strongly committed to the development and upholding of democracy, rule of law, equality of opportunity, freedom of speech and the rights of all men and women to live free from persecution of any kind. This is what the Prevent Strategy, released in 2011 to combat extremism, defines as British values.
We ensure that all students within the school have a voice that is listened to, and demonstrate how democracy works by actively promoting democratic processes such as a school council whose members are elected by the students. We have a range of other initiatives for student leadership which allow students to have input into the strategic planning of the school. A democratic process is in place to ensure fair representation.
Northwood has employed extensive safeguarding services for students as part of its commitment to the whole person. They include: a pastoral assistant, attendance and welfare officer, counsellors and LSAs. Every student has a Form Tutor and a Year Learning Coordinator who will usually stay with him/her for Years 7 - 11. The Designated Safeguarding Lead is the Deputy Head. We employ the services of an Education Welfare Officer and have a Safer Schools Officer. Records are kept meticulously and referrals are followed up conscientiously. Liaison with ‘Children and Family Services’ and other agencies are carried out effectively.
