Shaftesbury Primary School is a large multi-cultural, inner city school where there are 30 languages spoken. For over 90% of the learners, English is learned as an additional language. In addition, the school’s pupil population is very mobile.
The school’s staff team acknowledges that we have children who join us from different starting points in all year groups, but that does not stop us from having the expectation that all children will make very good progress in order to maximise their potential: be they very able children, able children or children who find academic learning challenging. The school takes an inclusive approach and structures it’s teaching and the education it provides in order to personalise learning.
The school carries out its work, focusing on three main aims
At Shaftesbury Primary School, we know the importance of providing a broad, balanced and challenging curriculum where all children are encouraged to meet high expectations and are empowered to learn effectively. Children are encouraged to take pleasure in their own and others’ learning.
We believe it is fundamental that children acquire knowledge, skills and confidence that can be applied to all future learning experiences. We place high priority on children’s emotional, social and spiritual and physical development. At Shaftesbury we strive to nurture children into being responsible members of the community.
In order to achieve these outcomes we will provide a school environment that is secure, stimulating, supportive and memorable. Every child is equally valued as part of the school community and all are encouraged, indeed expected, to achieve their full potential.
Shaftesbury aspires to create a successful learning culture, which will enable pupils to become informed, confident, enthusiastic and independent learners.
Our ethos is one in which the pupil’s interest and their quality of learning are central to the school’s work and purpose. All are encouraged to achieve their full potential and celebrate their achievement. We believe that our school should be a happy, caring and secure environment, where all individuals are valued without any form of discrimination, supported through partnerships with parents, carers and the wider community.

I was a student at your school during the war. I remember when there was bombing and the school was damaged and we all had to attend Monega Road School until the school was repaired. I was given the job of polishing the brass war memorial plate which had been badly tarnished by the bombing. My headmaster was Mr Hckling and he first told me I could go to University which I had never even heard of. . Another boy in my class' Alan Warsap also became a Doctor. I owe a great deal to your school and teachers I still remember after 70 plus years and even more importantly I remember some of what they t aught me. Bill Ward
