Knightswood Primary School is a vibrant and happy learning environment. Our children, teachers and support staff work together, learning from each other and expanding the knowledge and skills of our children through an active and broad curriculum which is being developed to meet the four capacities of the Curriculum for Excellence.

A non-denominational, co-educational school for children from Primary 1 to Primary 7. The school is situated in the Knightswood area in the West of Glasgow. Our current school role for Session 2022-2023 is 525.

The following guidelines set by the Scottish Executive will apply.

  • Primary 1 maximum class size 25
  • Primaries 2 and 3 maximum class size of 30
  • Primaries 4 – 7 maximum class size of 33
  • Composite classes maximum class size of 25

Composite Classes

Classes which have pupils from more than one stage, for example, Primary 4/3, then your child may be in a composite class.

This could be for one or more years during their time at Knightswood Primary School, depending on pupil/staff numbers.

We wish to nurture our young people to become Confident Individuals, Effective Contributors, Independent Learners and Responsible Citizens. Our children are valued and their strengths and skills are celebrated. Evaluation is an important tool on our learning journey, and we promote self and peer evaluation for all our learners. Expectations and achievements are high, and all children are encouraged, guided and advised on how to develop and improve.

We are proud of the ethos of respect and care we have developed in partnership with children and their families, and we promote positive behaviour through shared values. Our values are Respect, Wisdom, Justice and Integrity. Children are consulted and are given opportunities to influence the development of the school. We have an active Pupil Council, and other pupil groups. Staff, children and families are involved in setting the priorities for the School Improvement Plan. It is our wish to co-operate and work with families and others who can support the children’s learning in the widest sense, and we take every opportunity to listen to each other to best meet the children’s needs.

Bringing learning to life and life to learning. Curriculum for Excellence is now being introduced across Scotland for all 3-18 year olds – wherever they learn. It aims to raise standards, prepare our children for a future they do not yet know and equip them for jobs of tomorrow in a fast changing world.

Curriculum for Excellence enables professionals to teach subjects creatively, to work together across the school and with other schools, to share best practice and explore learning together. Teachers and practitioners will share information to plan a child’s “learning journey” from 3-18, helping their progression form nursery to primary, primary to secondary and beyond, ensuring the challenge is smooth. They’ll ensure children continue to work at a pace they can cope with and with challenge they can thrive on.

Curriculum for Excellence balances the importance of knowledge and skills. Every child is entitled to a broad and deep general education, whatever their level and ability. Every single teacher and practitioner will be responsible for literacy and numeracy – the language and numbers skills that unlock other subjects and are vital to everyday life.

Within classes, children are helped to develop socially and educationally by working in groups. Our pupils may work in ability, mixed ability, friendship and collaborative groups. The groups change according to the area of study being undertaken and teachers use a variety of strategies, i.e. group and individual teaching methods in their work programmes.
