The Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Amberg-Weiden (OTH – Technical University of Applied Sciences) is located in the Upper Palatinate, an administrative district of the federal state of Bavaria. It is home to four departments on two campuses in Amberg and Weiden, respectively, about 40 kilometers apart.
With approximately 3,500 students and an academic staff of 83, the University offers excellent conditions and career prospects. In addition to the regular academic programmes, students can choose from a variety of extra-curricular courses and activities to sharpen their skills and broaden their minds. Our graduates are in great demand on the regional and national labour markets, and our University constantly secures top places in university rankings.
Our main objective has been and still is to provide our students with a practical, theory-based education in close cooperation with our partners from business and industry. This practical orientation draws much of its strength from our professors’ extensive hands-on experience - all of them have worked outside academia for at least five years. Students benefit from small group teaching, practical seminars and laboratories and a compulsory work placement.
The university offers a portfolio of 33 study programmes in four departments (Mechanical Engineering/Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering/Media Production and Media Technology/Computer Sciences, Industrial Engineering and Business Studies), which all reflect current developments in engineering and economy. Nationwide unique programmes such as Patent Engineering at our location in Amberg are complemented by programmes in Renewable Energies, Plastics Engineering, Applied Computer Sciences, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology or Media Production and Media Technology. The profile of the campus in Weiden is complemented by programmes in Medical Engineering, Service and Retail Management and Industrial Technology Management. Both locations also offer consecutive Master programmes.
OTH Amberg-Weiden cultivates a unique model of cooperations and partnerships with companies, guaranteeing a direct transfer of knowledge and experience between teaching and practice, science and economy.
The OTH Amberg-Weiden places strong emphasis on service. A staff-student ratio of 1:40 ensures excellent conditions for students. Discussions during lectures, small groups and a close contact between students and staff are simply taken for granted. The University's Student Office, Student and Career Service and International Office are in close contact with applicants and students. They will help whenever a student needs information, support or guidance regarding studying or doing an internship abroad, especially with respect to application and admission procedures, scholarships and other funding opportunities.
The University has very close relationships with the 28 member companies of the Partner Circle, a close network of the most renowned companies in the region. Together, they systematically promote research and knowledge transfer initiatives between the University and its regional partners.
