The New Era University (NEU) and the Moscow State Institute for International Relations, known as MGIMO, signed a Memorandum of Understanding for academic collaboration. The signing which took place at the MGIMO campus in Moscow, Russia on May 14, 2018 “hopes to enrich the intellectual environment of both institutions.” This is the first agreement for MGIMO with a private institution from the Philippines.

The memorandum yielded among other things the establishment of Russian Language Center at NEU, faculty exchange program, identification of scholarship opportunities in Russia, and mounting seminars, conferences and workshops.

Dr. Julian J. Meimban III, NEU’s Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research, and Dr. Anatoly Torkunov, MGIMO’s rector, represented their respective institution. Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Allan Peter Cayetano, and Chief Presidential Legal Counsel, Salvador Panelo, witnessed the historic signing, which was organized by Philippine Ambassador to Russia, Carlos Sorreta. Also with NEU’s delegation were Dr. Carlos Tabunda Jr., Director of NEU-ASEAN Studies Center (NEU-ASC), and Mr. Cornelio Guerrero, adviser and producer of Eagle Broadcasting Company, the media partner of NEU.

NEU’s collaboration with Russian universities commenced in 2016 with the participation of NEU-ASC at the ASEAN-Russia University Forum held in Vladivosok. In November 2016, Dr. Elena Koldunova, vice dean of MGIMO’s Political Science department, delivered a talk on Russia’s Bilateral and Multilateral Relations in the ASEAN, at the NEU main campus in Quezon City, Philippines. And in March 2017, NEU helped in facilitating a Russian team of businessmen in the country.

“The New Era University takes pride to have engaged in joint endeavorse such as this, with one of the most reputable universities in the world,” Dr. Meimban said. MGIMO is dubbed as “the Harvard University of Russia.” NEU and MGIMO have their respective ASEAN Studies Center, which fosters their studies and researches on international relations.
