Kitami Institute of Technology is located in Kitami, a central city of northeastern Hokkaido, and midway between Mt. Daisetsu and the sea of Okhotsk. It is on a plain surrounded by mountains and is the commercial center of the Okhotsk area.

KIT offers a novel curriculum through cross-disciplinary engineering, with combined expertise and a wider degree of freedom of choice by going beyond conventional school division and attempting the link between related specialized fields. In this way a customized study program based on multifaceted ideas is possible and engineers combining a high level of fundamental knowledge, broad perspectives and expertise at the same time will be trained.

Engineering, in the process of development, has segmentized itself while incorporating other fields, and generated new frontiers of technology.Since this process will undoubtedly repeat itself in the future, it is of critical importance to foster engineers who are eager to venture into such frontiers. In this course we will not only focus on fundamental technologies but broaden our horizons to the fields of academic boundaries. We aim at fostering world class researchers who excel in comprehensive judgment and are equipped with creativity, leadership, and planning ability.

One of the roles of our institute that is expected by the community is to develop and expand engineering technology that will improve the quality of life (QOL) of the local people. In recent years, demands in medical engineering have been increasing, and we consider it as one of our responsibilities to meet such expectations. In this course we will promote education and esearch, based on what we have achieved, by collaborating with local healthcare professionals. We will foster highly specialized engineers who can contribute to the medical front from a medical engineering point of view.

Engineering is a discipline which aims at making “something useful” for the people’s life, safety, health and welfare, creating a “comfortable environment” and contributing to society through “craftsmanship, manufacturing and systems building” in industry and other sectors using various knowledge and technology based on science and mathematics. To summarize the engineering which Kitami Institute of Technology aims at in one phrase, it is “technology that harmonizes with nature”, i.e., “environmentally friendly engineering” which harnesses limited resources effectively without wasting resources and destroying the environment. “Environmentally friendly engineering” is an attractive still unknown field in need of cutting-edge technology.
