Time. We are never satisfied with the amount of time we have whether there’s too much or too little of it. Dubai has a lot to offer when it comes to spending time as your ‘Things To Do’ list somehow keeps on growing. Instead of spending that next weekend shopping at Outlet Mall or having yet another family BBQ at Mamzar Park, volunteering may be what you can choose to do.
1. Fun and free experience
Volunteering is one way to enjoy the event even if you cannot afford the regular price. Dubai hosts events all year round whether it’s for sport, entertainment or something completely new. You will be able to see things that no one else can see, you don’t need a backstage pass because you are on the backstage.
2. Hey, I just met you
Volunteering at events is a great way of meeting new people and possibly make some friends. You will bump into people from all sorts of backgrounds.
3. Friends forever
Who said that volunteering is a solo activity? Some events need A LOT of volunteers so why not get your friends involved as well. It will be a nice change from a trip to the cinema or the beach and this help you make your bonds stronger.
4. Learning new skills
Between making new friends and enjoying the overall event, you might grow certain skills. Learn how to lead a team or how to adapt to stressful situations. Listening to classroom lectures is only part of your academic development so get out and get involved.
Here are a few recommended organizations where you can volunteer in Dubai by the UK College of Business & Computing (UKCBC) Dubai:
1. Dubai Cares
Charitable initiatives are organised all year round by this association and will not only help put a smile on the faces of those in need but on yours as well. From setting up fundraisers to lending a hand at orphanages, volunteers will always be needed here.
2. Colour Run
A race where finishing 1st comes second to having fun, known as the Happiest 5K in the world, you will be ambushed with multiple colours as you make your way through the course. This is one volunteering activity that will leave you looking like a rainbow.
3. Tough Mudder
Maybe you like a bit more adventure on your run, Tough Mudder will give you a thrill while you spill across the many obstacles laid out. Are you tough enough to conquer this race? Being a volunteer will bring you up close to the action where you might also get a chance to try some of those extreme obstacles for yourself.
4. Dubai International Film Festival
A week-long screening event of movies from all around the world. Also, what would a film festival be without a red carpet featuring some of the top actors, actresses, directors and film producers. Film Fans who wish to share some of that spotlight should be ready for their close-up when this event rolls into town.
5. Middle East Comic Con
Movies, Anime, Comics and TV Shows all in one place. Yes, this exists, and it’s called Middle East Comic Con which takes place annually in Dubai. Need I say more? Volunteers will get the opportunity to help in various places across the Con whether at panel discussions or for the cosplay competition.
6. Step Conference
Interested in the latest and greatest startups operating in the region? Aspire to be an Entrepreneur someday? If you said yes to either of these questions, then the Step Conference should be added to your calendar. Volunteering for this event may land you future internship opportunities or even introduce you to someone who could fund your great idea one day.
