We are a thriving community of kind and well-rounded students, faculty, administration, alumni, parents, and friends. Today, our three-campus K-12 school balances rigorous academics with robust enrichment classes. Our students engage in meaningful, varied opportunities that empower them to explore their talents and develop new skills. Pinewood is a joyful community with passionate, accessible teachers and administrators who partner with students and parents in the education journey. With state-of-the-art updates, our facilities provide the space for all to flourish. We inspire the best in our students as we encourage them to become kind, well-rounded people who are poised to change their world for the better.
Students, parents, and teachers say it all the time: Pinewood is a family. It’s an encouraging, supportive, safe community where students and teachers inspire the best in each other every day. And it’s no wonder. Our founders—my grandparents—Gwen and Vic Riches, started the school in the family home here in 1959. The pine grove they planted still thrives on Middle Campus, and gives our school its name.
Today, members of the extended Riches family, along with Pinewood’s outstanding faculty and staff, carry on our founders’ vision. Our program carefully balances academics, training in public speaking and the arts, physical education, and the practice of timeless moral values. And we’ve seen generations of our students grow into confident, thoughtful, expressive young adults, fully prepared for college and life beyond. At Pinewood, we shape our students' growth through a more intentional way of learning:
Through this more intentional way of learning, Pinewood students grow as considerate, adventurous, expressive, self-aware young people, prepared for their top‐choice colleges and for meaningful and productive lives.
We are committed to the intellectual development of our students and assume that students who come to Pinewood care about learning and are eager to participate actively in their education. “Pinewood is the Difference” and we take pride in making this a reality. Pinewood values the strengths and rich content of a classical education. Students master the foundational knowledge essential for developing higher level thinking skills (creativity, analysis, critical thinking).
Pinewood students realize that confidence is the willingness to attempt a difficult task no matter what the outcome and, therefore, are not afraid to try new challenges. They increase their academic stamina as they experience the rewards of tenacity and focus.
Families come to Pinewood for many reasons—dynamic, expert teachers; top-flight academic programs; our commitment to fostering confident self-expression; the wide range of sports and activities we offer; our community’s timeless core values. But as students and parents soon discover, all these benefits work in concert to make Pinewood a place like no other.
Pinewood offers a blend of classic and progressive education. The intentional, interactive, sequential process prepares students fully for their next stage in life—whether that’s first grade, college, or somewhere in between. Through the five tenets of our founding philosophy — passionate expertise, confident self-expression, academic stamina, grounded core values, and supportive exploration — we instill curiosity, mastery, and independence. Our small class sizes enable our teachers to know every student as an individual, including the ways he or she learns best. While mastering class content and pursuing potential interests, students become more creative, passionate, well-rounded, self-motivated, ethical, and insightful. As they encounter challenges and take risks, students build tenacity and resilience, becoming confident leaders and contributors inside and outside of the classroom.
It’s no wonder that Pinewood students’ academic achievements match or exceed those of any school in the area. And with the guidance of our comprehensive, expert-led college counseling program, our students go on to attend the finest colleges and universities in the nation.
