Ysgol Gynradd Gwaelod-Y-Garth Primary School

Gwaelod y Garth Primary School is a dual stream community school, which provides its pupils with education through the medium of Welsh or English, depending on parental choice. The school is situated in the village of Gwaelod y Garth, some seven miles from the centre of Cardiff. The school serves a catchment area comprising of Gwaelod y Garth, Tongwynlais and Morganstown.

We are lucky enough to have beautiful surroundings and some wonderful buildings, but ultimately the real strength of Ysgol Gwaelod y Garth Primary School rests with the school community. The team is a strong one, relationships are excellent, the staff and children are well motivated and the parents and governors are very supportive. Education is a partnership between the school and the home and we value the excellent relationship we have with all parents.

As a school, we are proud of the collaboration between theWelsh and English Units. Pupils enjoy playing together during playtimes, share assemblies and presentations and have the opportunity to interact during school clubs. Some activities and lessons are introduced collaboratively including Chess lessons and PE lessons. Teachers from the Welsh and English Units plan, prepare and share good practice together to ensure standards are high throughout the school.

Ysgol Gynradd Gwaelod y Garth Primary School is a community school which provides its pupils with education through the medium of Welsh or English according to parental choice. It is situated in the village of Gwaelod y Garth, some seven miles from the centre of Cardiff. The local education authority (LEA) is Cardiff. The English unit’s catchment area consists of the village of Gwaelod y Garth while the Welsh section’s catchment area covers Gwaelod y Garth, Tongwynlais and Morganstown.

There are 292 pupils on role, a figure that includes children who receive part-time nursery education.

During recent years a significant rebuilding and refurbishment programme has been in place to improve the quality of accommodation. During 2011 a further rebuilding and refurbishment programme was completed. The school kitchen is now situated in the Village Hall and the Hall is now for school use during the school day and for community use during the evenings and weekends. This is an exciting development for the school and will be of great benefit to the school and to the community as a whole.

We are a dual stream school, which provides education to its pupils through the medium of Welsh or English depending on parents' choice. The collaboration between the Welsh and English units is a unique feature of the school and both languages ​​are given equal status and importance.

The school community is an integral and unique part of the Gwaelod y Garth ethos and we strongly believe that the best way to provide education is through a successful partnership between the home, the school and the local community. With the help of parents, we want to foster a love of learning and equip every child with the tools they need to succeed in life.
