Bishop Seabury Academy is a college preparatory school, but we are more than that. We are ambitious for our students and believe that all young people have a right to expect an excellent education in a safe environment—where curiosity and intelligence are qualities to be admired. Our school is for students who are serious about education and want to explore their potential, whether they are in the classroom, on the field, or on stage.

Our inspired, committed teachers bring to their classes a real passion for learning, and we engage each student as an individual, complicated human being. We stress the core curriculum and emphasize critical thinking in all areas. Our classes are rich with discussion and students are required to be active participants in their education and in their lives. Every student participates in both athletics and the arts. In this way, our students develop into confident, engaged, and exuberant people who can adapt to diverse learning environments and challenges.

Bishop Seabury Academy is an independent, college preparatory school which promotes individual academic growth and character development through an excellent education rooted in moral principles. Bishop Seabury Academy will provide a supportive environment in which students are encouraged to explore their potential. Therefore, the Academy will:

  • Nurture and challenge the intellectual curiosity and creativity of students through a core curriculum dedicated to the humanities, math and science, and foreign language;
  • Be committed to each individual’s academic growth and spiritual awareness;
  • Encourage participation in, and appreciation of, the fine arts;
  • Advocate sportsmanship and support participation in competitive athletic programs;
  • Promote a sense of responsibility for self and respect for others as members of the community.

Bishop Seabury Academy is an Episcopal school, composed of people with various beliefs and backgrounds: Christians, Jews, Muslims, and other faiths, as well as agnostics and atheists. Our goal as an Episcopal school is to nurture the spiritual and ethical life of each person and to welcome everyone to our community.

Every Wednesday morning begins with an all-school chapel conducted by the school chaplain and facilitated by a group of students and faculty who promote the values of our school. Chapel services incorporate elements of prayer, scripture, personal reflection, music, art, and technology. The school year also includes Convocation and Baccalaureate, two annual events that celebrate our community’s inclusive Episcopal heritage. From our spiritual grounding in the Episcopal tradition, we also join in the celebrations of other religious traditions.

Within the school’s liberal-humanist tradition of college preparation, students at Seabury study the world’s religions and ethical traditions rigorously and with respect. Our community service program incorporates each student into the life of our wider Lawrence community, with particular attention to and solidarity with those in need. At Seabury, we strive to serve, not to be served.

A Seabury education pushes students to wrestle with the larger questions of meaning and value in life and come to answers by way of study, discussion, service, and self-reflection. At Seabury, each person is nurtured not only academically but also physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Our curriculum is global in orientation, meaning that students learn to understand and value the many cultures of our world. At the same time the curriculum is broadly humanist, in that they explore what binds us together as humans in all our complexity. The teaching of ethical conduct and cultural competency takes place in small class sizes and discussion-based learning.

Bishop Seabury Academy is fully accredited with the Independent Schools Association of the Central States; the school is affiliated with the National Association of Episcopal Schools, the Kansas Association of Independent and Religious Schools, the Kansas State High School Activities Association, the Kansas City Association of Independent Schools, and the National Association of College Admission Counselors.

Part of the vision of Bishop Seabury Academy is to promote a sense of responsibility for self and respect for others as members of the community. To achieve this vision, Bishop Seabury requires middle-school students to complete 20 hours of community service and high-school students to complete 30 hours of community service during each academic year. The community service requirement is consistent with Seabury’s commitment to encouraging character development and personal growth in each student, and it also reflects the degree of community involvement that we expect of all of our students.
