This programme will help you develop the skills and knowledge you need to face the demands of this rewarding industry. Our expert lecturers have worked in the field and have first-hand knowledge of the social work sector. They will guide you through modules from psychology, human growth and development, to law and mental health. They will also keep you up-to-date with the constantly changing social work policies and legislation. You will have the opportunity to complete a range of social work placements to demonstrate and develop your social work skills, fully preparing you for employment.

Aims

This programme aims to:

  • Enable graduate social workers to, through the application of heightened intellectual, analytical, and problem solving skills, demonstrate fitness for practice, in line with recognised professional standards.
  • Produce autonomous practitioners with a focus upon evidence based practice.
  • Enhance the employability and career prospects of learners, equipping graduates to meet the employment demands of interprofessional, interagency and partnership working as practitioners in the statutory, voluntary and private sectors.
  • Develop critically reflective practitioners, who, advocating the philosophy of continual professional development, will continue to meet the requirements of the skill base of the local, regional, and national economy.
  • Ensure your study is influenced throughout by the experiences of service users and carers.
  • Ensure you are eligible to apply for registration as a social worker with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) upon successful completion of the programme.
  • Enable students to be ready for the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment as a newly qualified social worker.

Modules At Level 4

  • Communication & Research Skills for Professional Practice - you will develop your communication and research skills within Social Work.
  • Relating Social Work Theory & Practice 1 - you will be introduced to theories of Social Work practice, e.g. Task Centred Approach and how this works within Social Work.
  • Law for Social Workers - this module will introduce relevant and up-to-date legislation linked to Social Work.
  • Human Growth and Development – you will learn more about behaviours which impact upon decision making within Social Work.
  • Introduction to Sociology for Social Work - this module will look at sociological aspects linked to social work such as community.
  • Introduction to Social Policy for Social Work – you will be introduced to the ever changing policies within Social Work practice.

At Level 5

  • Relating Social Work Theory and Practice II – you will further develop your understanding of theory and its importance within Social Work practice.
  • Mental Health for Social Workers - this module introduces and discusses the mental health legislation and best practice within Social Work.
  • Working with children, young people and their families - this module introduces and discusses how Social Workers interact with Children and Childcare legislation.
  • Working with Adults – you will further develop your understanding of Adult legislation and the impact of this on Social Work.
  • Placement I – you will undertake a 70 day work placement, to demonstrate you can apply what you have learnt in the classroom to practice.

At Level 6

  • Relating Social Work Theory and Practice III – you will further develop your knowledge learnt at Level 4 and Level 5, and will look at the importance of social work theory and practice.
  • Contemporary Issues in Social Welfare – you will investigate the latest research and best practice.
  • Research for Social Work – Dissertation module.
  • Placement 2 - you will undertake a work placement of 100 days.

Interview Instructions

You can apply via UCAS or through the College website. If you are successful, you will be invited into the College to attend an interview. This will entail a welcome and introduction to the course and a tour of the College. You will be required to complete a written test and will take part in an assessed group discussion. After this, you will have an individual interview with a panel made up of course tutors and industry representatives. Following a successful interview, you will be offered a conditional or unconditional place.

Entry Criteria

You will be required to have the following qualifications and personal and intellectual qualities to be a Social Worker.

  • UCAS tariff points: 120
  • 96 UCAS points
  • GCSE or Level 2 equivalent in maths and English
  • International English Language Test (ILETS) at Level 7 in listening, speaking, reading and writing (applicable to International students)
  • The ability to communicate clearly and accurately.

Non-standard entry criteria

  • Non-standard/ vocational qualifications and/or significant knowledge and experience in a scientific or health-care setting.
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): You may have previously studied on a similar award and gained higher education credit at an equivalent level.
  • Applicants should apply for RPL prior to enrolment as it may be possible to take this into account to gain exemptions from one or more modules. A full copy of the procedure is available by emailing [email protected].
