This four-year extended degree course aims to provide a sound conceptual foundation for a professional, managerial or business career. It will help you understand current thinking, analyse current problems in accounting and finance, and help you deal with the rapidly changing business environment.

The first level aims to provide an introduction to university study and a general introduction to the accounting and finance business. It seeks to develop your personal skills and study skills in preparation for Level 4 where the core modules of the course satisfy some of the requirements of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants (ACCA), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW) and the Association of International Accountants (AIA). You can use the Level 6 option modules to gain further exemptions.

Our teaching staff have academic and professional experience in public audit, taxation, financial reporting, management accounting and information systems. External speakers are also invited to give presentations on contemporary accounting, finance and business-related issues.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have:

  • at least one A level (or a minimum of 40 UCAS points from an equivalent Level 3 qualification, eg BTEC Subsidiary/National/BTEC Extended Diploma).
  • English Language and Mathematics GCSEs at grade C (grade 4 from 2017) or above (or equivalent).

All applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Applicants who require a Tier 4 student visa may need to provide a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as Academic IELTS. Modular structure

The modules listed below are for the academic year 2018/19 and represent the course modules at this time. Modules and module details (including, but not limited to, location and time) are subject to change over time.

Development for Success in Business (core, 30 credits)

This module focuses on the accounting requirements of business organisations for internal and external reporting and decision making. It will examine the financial and management accounting techniques and decisions for sole traders and limited companies. It will be delivered using lectures and seminars across the teaching year.

It will be assessed using one in-class test on the principles of double entry bookkeeping ( 20% ), one piece of coursework on the principles of financial accounting ( 40% ) and one piece of coursework on the principles of management accounting( 40% ).

The Context of Business (core, 30 credits)

This module introduces students to the contexts of business. Business functions including innovation, operations, marketing, human resource management, finance and accounting, all of which interact with one another, can only be fully understood when the environmental, organisational, and strategic contexts within which the business operates are also understood. The focus of this module is the development of students’ understanding of how business organisations work and operate in the wider environment. Students’ have opportunities to examine the various functions of businesses and their relevant environments. They will analyse a variety of business situations and cases. This module introduces students to the concept of globalisation in terms of its impact on socio-cultural, political, economic and technological factors. The main aim of the module is to introduce students to the impact of various contexts on business itself, and to provide them with opportunities to enhance a wide range of academic and business skills such as commercial awareness, and sensitivity in terms of people and cultures.

Using and Managing Data and Information (core, 30 credits)

This module aims to provide students with a thorough overview of the numerical and technological skills needed to analyse data in the context of business analysis. The module encompasses aspects of mathematics, statistics and information technology relevant to not only the business management course but also to all other UG courses. The module focuses on numbers and data and their computational and analysis techniques that leads to the understanding of Accounting, Finance, Business, Aviation and Economics related information. Students will make use of a range of facilities on Excel to calculate, analyse and present efficiently.
