Biology of Infectious Disease Extended Degree

As a Biology of Infectious Disease student, you'll graduate with a deep understanding of the scientific basis of health and disease. This exciting course helps you to develop technical skills and competencies in a range of specialist areas. You'll be equipped for careers in areas as diverse as the medical and allied research institutes, health agency laboratories, bio-analytical medical genetics and forensic units, the pharmaceutical industry and health and safety.

A typical week involves a minimum 12 hours contact time with academic staff in a variety of forms, including: lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops or practicals. Practicals and projects are conducted in the state-or-the art Science Centre purported to be the largest teaching laboratory in Europe. Our Library has just completed extensive renovation and has many areas for group or independent study with Wi-Fi and computer facilities, or to relax with friends over a coffee.

Assessment

Students are assessed through a variety of methods including problem solving exercises, in-class tests, practical datasheets, and essays. Formative assessments include group activities in tutorial classes and mini-tests.

Professional accreditation

Accreditation by the Royal Society of Biology to be arranged.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have:

• At least one A level (or a minimum of 32 UCAS points from an equivalent Level 3 qualification, eg BTEC Subsidiary/National/BTEC Extended Diploma).
• English Language and Mathematics GCSEs at grade C/grade 4 or above (or equivalent).
• Applicants who meet the UCAS points criteria but who obtained a D/grade 3 in English and/or Maths at GCSE may be offered a University test in these areas.

All applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Applicants who require a Tier 4 student visa may need to provide a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as Academic IELTS. Modular structure

The modules listed below are for the academic year 2018/19 and represent the course modules at this time. Modules and module details (including, but not limited to, location and time) are subject to change over time. Year 1 modules include:

• Biochemistry (core, 30 credits)
• Biology (core, 30 credits)
• Chemistry (core, 30 credits)
• Scientific Studies (core, 30 credits)

After the course

Graduates will be equipped for employment in the medical and allied research institutes, health agency laboratories, in bioanalytical medical genetics and forensic units, in the pharmaceutical industry, and in information services, health and safety and science education. The analytical, numerical and communication skills developed by Medical Bioscience graduates are also in demand in non-science-based careers, such as those in the financial services sector, marketing and company administration.
